Eto'o played a defence splitting through ball for the penalty. I thought he was ok today.
Yes and thats all he did most of his through balls were wayward and missed a sitter in the first minute after that strolled around in midfield giving the ball away more often than not!
He was too far away to support Lukaku, not his fote today playing too deep most of the game looked better as you stated when in the penalty area area zone not on the halfway line!

We should have started with Naismith and left Lukaku on the bench.

Martinez should have introduced him earlier.

In a game like that where we had little movement in the final third he'd have caused at least some consternation to that Sunderland defence.

Eto'o: regardless of the pass to Coleman for the pen, he stunk today. There's no disguising that.

I think we should drop Lukaku to the bench for the next game.

He might make a bigger impact coming on from the bench.

The chance he had to day, just needed him to hit the ball under the keeper not go around him.

We have to find somewhere for him to get into our side.

I hate accommodating players and that's what we're doing at the moment and there's no doubt his best position is the number 10, where Barkley plays.

That means pushing one of them onto the wing or dropping one.

IF we had a top class (like Kev) left wingers I'd drop one, but I think they bring more than the likes of McGeady or Atsu.

I don't think either of Lukaku or Eto'o can play in midfield, you pick one to start up front and drop the other, can't play them both in 4-2-3-1.

If it was up to me I'd change to the diamond formation, but I don't think that's going to happen so sticking with the 4-2-3-1with injuries in mind after internationals I'd go:

Howard
Coleman Distin Jagielka Baines
McCarthy Besic
Mirallas Naismith Barkley
Lukaku

BUT I'd make sure Kev, Naisy and Barkley are all constantly switching so none of them or constantly on the wing. This would confuse the other team as they wouldn't know who's where and would open up spaces. That's the only way to play them both IMO.

He should have come on earlier today, but it did seem like he was second to every ball (completely opposite to the norm for him, but just something I noticed).

I don't get this constantly changing/rotating players positions, it doesn't confuse the opposition it upsets the balance of our own team. We seem to do it every game with the likes of Eto'o, Naisy and Barkely ending up on the wing where they are ineffective.

This. Fair enough we have the Europa League to contend with but too much chopping and changing of the attacking players just disrupts the team.

Who else would you have on the wing with Pienaar and Mirallas both injured? Our only other dedicated winger Atsu doesn't look ready for the league yet, not a slight on the lad as think Deulofeu's speed of adapting has given us somewhat unrealistic expectations.

The available options are Osman, Barkley, Eto'o, Naismith or Lukaku - all of whom have taken their turn on the wing. Perhaps the best has been Naismith against Aston Villa but it is not the ideal postion for any of them. Oviedo might have been an option but he's coming back from a bad injury himself.

It's the constant tinkering during matches that's bothering me. Of course the players you have mentioned can 'do a job' out wide but they are far more comfortable in their natural positions and the balance of the team is suffering as a result.

I think it because none of them are ideal in the wing role that we are tinkering during the game - trying to find the least bad one out on the wing for that particular opponent :(

Agree the balance of the team suffers but until the injured regain fitness or Atsu settles into the league can't see what else we can do.

Spot on mate. Reinforcements in the next transfer window hopefully.

Apologies for taking the thread off topic, hope Naisy has his shooting boots on for Scotland this Friday.
