I really don't think there will be a clash, I don't understand why you'd appoint Walsh in that sort of role. He was well thought of in the game for his scouting and how he set up our scouting departments.

I think he'll over see sections of the footballing side there, but the manager will dictate tactics and who plays etc. All the on the pitch stuff.
Last week Walsh made a point of saying he watches training every day, why? how would that matter if has you say he has no on-field role.
Koemans remarks have been well aimed at Walsh.
I think Koeman wants the two from Man U but Walsh is not keen, why else would be holding back for the sake of two million.
Walsh wanted Lookman and was prepared to go over the on the value for him, now I do not have a problem with Lookman, but he his for the future.
However, we cannot get players over the line that we need now.

just seen a pic tweeted of him hard at work..

Yes it is, that's what a DOF job is, if not why his he there.
Because you wanted one of the most respected scouts in the game? He was a scout not a DOF at Leicester... so I can only presume you wanted his eye for players. Rather than his ability to sort out contracts etc, that he had nothing to do with at Leicester.

So he can give advice where it's wanted, so he can run his eye over all the players (I presume after all you signed him for his ability to pick a player and build a team), so he's aware of team spirit, players that are / aren't good eggs?

If you're asking him to build a squad with the manager, then I'd think it's quite good practice.

I read an article last year shortly about Sevilla's director of football Monchi shortly before their gorgeous victory in the Europa League final. Just did a quick google and found it. Naturally he didn't give loads away but this excerpt is probably the most indicative of what HIS role is.

“Sixteen people cover a series of leagues. For the first five months we watch a lot of football but with no particular aim: we’re just accumulating data. Every month we produce an ideal XI for each league. Then in December we start watching players who appeared regularly in different contexts – home, away, international – to build the broadest possible profile.”

Monchi pulls out his phone and, carefully reducing the image so the names can’t be seen, says: “That gives us this.” A colour-coded spreadsheet shows players by position. Around 250 potential targets, in all positions. “The manager says: ‘I want a left-back who averages 11km a game, runs 800m at full speed, uses both feet.’ And from these, 10 will fit.”

Now I'm not saying Walsh utilises this exact same method, but I think the point to be made is that his primary responsibility will be gathering potential signings for our first team, and then narrowing these down based on the manager's requirements. I doubt he has any financial involvement in deals, but it wouldn't surprise me if he had some personal interaction with potential signings, just gauging their mentality. If it's his job to see who's physically and technically good enough, I assume seeing who's mentally up for it is another part of the puzzle.

I think the thing to bear in mind though is that the role of DOF varies from club to club, and what Walsh does for us is probably a lot different from what Leonardo was doing at PSG when he was there. At the end of the day he'll be judged as a success or failure dependant on recruitment, nothing else. He just needs to make sure there's more hits than misses. Everyone forgets Comolli signed Bale and Modric for Spurs because a few years later he thought Charlie Adam had a world class left peg. Good times

He was assistant manager and scout, the role ofDOF is to have a transfer budget and sign player within that budget, he would also have a wages budget that he can go up to, all these negotiations then have to be signed off at an executive level MD/chairman.
Now they may be a problem with the signing off but the work is down Walsh

If Walsh really did sign players over the manager's head or attempt to dissuade him from signing the players he wants, then there's no doubt that would be problematic. For instance Koeman has actually managed Schneiderlin- it should be a no brainer. The club needs to trust the manager on this one. Otherwise there's not much point him being here. Personally I don't think there is any issue with Walsh. However, and this is just speculation, perhaps he's been given specific directives and parameters to work within when it comes to recruitment e.g young players with potential for a great sell on value. Unfortunately when we as fans don't know exactly who's responsible for what, if things go balls up you get a lot of finger pointing and people shirking the blame. Happens quite a bit with managers and DOF's if it does go pear shaped.

Do you not think the manager is capable, along with his coaching staff, to decide such matters you raise.
If not then sack them all, they are not up to the job.

Comments can be interperted in one of several ways

That the board know who Koeman wants and it differs from who Walsh wants, so he is basically giving an ultimatum to the board on 'who do you support'
That the board knows who him and walsh both want (the same players agreed upon) and they arent being backed to get them in - or rather the negotiators are failing by basically messign round in negotiations
Or that both him and walsh have differing targets and neither are being supported in any of the players they have asked the board to bring in

None of the above is a good thing, it shows that Moshiri - may be a great owner and time will show that, but the summer he was failed massively as was the manager by people not able to close deals, and from his interview the other week he seemed to be issuing a frank statement of the same wont happen again, but if he didnt make chjanges and simply he has told the people this is there last chance to get things done - then hes failed the club as he has put faith in incompetent people who arent doing whats asked,

so yeah he may can them all after the window, but as a supporter hows that help us, yeah great thanks for another watsed year to add to the 21 previous ones
