It seems he was appointed because Moshiri felt it was an easy-win, another step in the right direction and something that most were in agreement with.
I still think the DoF role can work, but not where the incumbent seemingly has no clear definition of duties and no clear place in the hierarchy.
Apart from the signings obviously, I don't think Walsh has the force of character to be a success in the role. If the job is being done properly, the DoF will be the meat in the sandwich between the board and the manager, and if you're acting as a check on everything, then there is plenty of room for conflict and argument. He will be the voice of prudence and caution, and usually one that the manager doesn't wish to hear.
It is a senior role, and far from that of chief-scout, where you get paid for your opinions but have no responsibility or authority.
The majority of our signings it seems were just waved through, and any form of proper assessment was over-ridden. How else can you begin a season with no recognised senior striker, and no cover at LB, amongst other deficiencies.
I won't say I am sorry for him, as if he feels there is an impediment to him doing his job properly, he should stop taking his salary and walk.
