I understand bluejocks stance above that there's a desire to win a trophy at all costs - but surely there has to be an understanding as to why playing your strongest possible team in this competition all the time isn't necessarily practical from a overall point of view.

But there's a middle ground between demanding the strongest possible team and not caring if you lose.

I think martinez could have played that same team and still won with better use of his subs. It's a failing to me that he didn't because it's a game I personally really cared about winning.

Seriously mate, that's exactly what I'm saying! The middle ground is rotating the side to keep your key assets back for the more important competition and keeping fringe players happy. Which is what he did. As I said, I believe he picked a side that he thought could go out and win the game, but not his actual strongest side.

I agree Martinez messed up the subs slightly. The two that came on came a fraction too late, as did Mirallas, but that's a different matter entirely.

Out of curiosity, when Martinez plays a shadow side in the fa cup will you have a problem with that?

Of course, that'd be insane. Our focus should be 100% on the FA Cup and League this year. I'm just saying the League Cup is a secondary competition that doesn't receive the same degree of focus as those two competitions do.

The team wigan played in the pre goodison fa cup rounds last year was, imo, weaker relative to the first team than the team he picked last right.

But they were in a relegation fight and playing lower league teams.

I think that's the key - priorities ain't it.

It goes like this:

League
FA Cup
League Cup

He played a shadow side at Wigan because the league status was genuinely threatened. But once they progressed to the serious rounds, the full side came in as it became a greater priority.

He won't do the same with Everton this season, completely different scenario.
