If you start a wee bit silly argumentative posts on here they generally get pulled up, respectfully mate, you know the score.

You said I didn't understand the depth of feeling about going out of the League Cup. You're completely right, I don't.

So I started a thread about it, which I took time to write that included what I understood about the topic and asked questions to try and gain a deeper understanding.

You call it silly and argumentative and suggested I was dim for expressing the view I did. Fair enough.

This 1 lads?

Yes.

The aim in the early rounds of a cup is to get to the next round. Ideally with the least ammount taken our of your first XI, in terms of effort, injuries, suspensions etc as possible. That's what Martinez was trying to do and that's what City and Spurs were trying to do.

Only they judged it spot on, he judged it wrong. Hence we're out and they're not.

Far too simplistic a statement. It's quite possible that City and Spurs could select the wrong team/tactics while we get it spot on but football being football the results go the opposite way.

There was nothing glaringly wrong that made Fulham the better team and thoroughly deserving of the win. Neither team kept any momentum or really got going at any point. I'm sure Gibbo 9 times out of ten will actually shift his arse and close down Bent for example. He didn't and we got punished.

The team picked was good enough to win that. Just didnt happen.

As for the cup importance/big club argument...well I'd like us to win it because we havent and because it means Europe and possible competitive ties just like our last one versus Fiorentina...where I'm sure we all went crazy when we came back from 2 down despite what happened in the end. As a fan you want big nights/moments like that. However...I wouldn't be singing songs or wearing tshirts to commemorate our winning of it. That would be embarrasing.

Not sure if it would or wouldnt raise our profile on its own but it would be a step towards many positive things such as a more winning mentality at the club, a great start for a new manager to kick on, possibility of big European nights at Goodison...basically lots of good stuff. Good stuff which, yes, could make the club more attractive to some players.

However its clear this competition is not prioritised by most of the Premier League clubs so I don't see the point of the whinging in the match thread. Martinez did nothing different than his peers, and I am pretty sure anybody else we'd have gotten in instead of Martinez would've done the same.

Anyways....i think we all like a good argument/debate on here and lets face it some of the overthetoppers in the match threads get it all going with statements like tonight was a total disaster or something like that...

Following on from a discussion in the match thread that has honestly taken me by surprise, so a genuine question for the younger fans.

Do you genuinely feel that winning the League Cup (or ANY cup for that matter) is a prerequisite for Everton to be an established big club?

The reason I ask is because I understand we haven't won anything since 1995 and that is now an entire life for an 18 year old lad, so I wonder how much influence the history and prestige of the club has on how you view yourself as an Evertonian.

Now, I'm not deluded. I know we're not a successful footballing giant in the modern era like Manchester United, or even to a lesser extent Liverpool. Or one of the nouveau riche Chelsea and Man City, who could be argued to be "bigger" depending on your criteria.

But I'm alarmed at the absolute panic at not playing a full strength side in a League Cup game in a transitional season following a good start in the league? See, for me, we're still a massive football club, and the focus will always be above and beyond the League Cup.

So... yeah, are younger people seriously in meltdown over going out of the League Cup or is this just temporary over the top kneejerking?

I agree with you, as I do most times. I think though, winning the League Cup would be nice as we have not won it before. But this season, Martinez is aiming for the top four. He is taking it game by game, and it's nice to see that we're genuinely aiming for the top four instead of half-heartedly arsing about with the aim under Moyes. I really think we could get in the top 4, and if we're in the Champions League next season, that would be much better than winning a League Cup.

We're a big club, and CL should be our aim every season in this modern era. Lets hope we beat Newcastle well.
