Alright Bruce, you alright mate?

Anyway. Half way through the season, 33 points with 18 games remaining and the table looks like this;

Now as a rule, 60 points tends to equal Europe. Last few years (05/06 exception) tend to show 60 points has even meant Champions League but as rule, lets say 60 points is Europe.

Okay, so to get to 60 points we would need 9 wins from our remaining 18 games... or 27 points.

Looking at our remaining 18 games.... how optimistic are you of us reaching 60 points?

Final League Table

Very.

If you look at that list we have it in our own hands. Some good fixtures against potential rivals that we have to win, whereas there are going to be a lot of six-pointers elsewhere at the top.

Everton v Man City
Everton v Portsmouth
Everton v West Ham
Everton v Aston Villa
Everton v Newcastle
Everton v Chelsea

and, of course, Liverpool v Everton

With a full strength team yes we would piss that easy. Hell i'd say with a first choice team we would be looking at a good 12 wins and 3 draws and confident of that.

But we aint gonna have a full strength team for at least 4 of them games due to injuries, suspensions and the ANC which we already know about, and who knows what will happen after mid Feb.

But i reckon even with those players out we are still good enough to get 9 wins from those matches easy.

Most important wins will be agaisnt those teams competing with us for the top spots. If we can take 3 points off Liverpool, Man City, Blackburn, Villa and Portsmouth we can afford to slip up against the other teams. It will be no good beating Wigan and Chelsea if we lose to Man city and Blackburn.

So yeah, to put it simply we can still take 4th place but more realistically 5th will be ours easy :)

You have a really good point there mate, we play near enough all of our rivals for a sixth spot with home advantage. Include Spurs in that too.

Not to be pesamistic but i think this season will be different, i think we are looking at a higher points total then sixty for gaurented CL football 56-60 should gaurentee uefa!

Villa are showing amazing consistentecy at the moment, City are beginig to slip but i can see them buying big in the window, while blackburn are still there lurking, i expect January to hit Pompey hard and they may fade! While i think the [Poor language removed] just are begining to show a lot of inconsistency which i think mirrors the situation of the feild over there, that said they always get the rub of the green! Its all up for grabs and i think decideing factors will come in games against us and teams mentioned!

Must of seen this weekends results in his crystal ball! If we keep up our form so far we should hit 65-68 points, which should certainly be good enough for 5th, and knowing the RS could see us nick 4th again...

I'd say we have a few things in our favour.

1. Liverpool will have the Champions League to contend with. If they get to the latter stages of that their league form could suffer considerably as they have no hope of winning the PL.

2. Neither Man City or Villa have had any major injuries yet to key players. I think City for instance have used fewer players this season than anyone. Will they fade as the season reaches its conclusion? It's worth remembering that City also have quite a few young players in their squad. How will they do when the pressure is on?

There is a definate gap developing now between us four and the chasing pack. I'm still a little watchful of Spurs as they can score goals for fun, if they sort their defence out then they could mount a late charge. No one else in the chasing pack seems to have the consistency to close the gap however.

So if we're fortunate with injuries and cut out mistakes we could do well, especially we many of the team have experience of a run-in so know the kind of pressure it involves.

But they will also be fighting tooth and nail to hang onto that final CL place. Interesting times. Currently, I think Villa are the ones to watch. Even if we keep on churning out the results, it's going to be close. Just did the BBC Predictor thing and had us swinging between 7th and 4th as we hit hard patches or the others had tough encounters or were playing each other.

I get the feeling anyone who hits a bad run is going to be dropped by the pack like Portsmouth, West Ham and Blackburn (depending on result today).

Do we really want CL though? Are we ready?

As much as i'd love to finish 4th and have a good run in the CL i think all things considered we will be better off in 5th and another shot at UEFA cup.

Then hopefully go for CL qualification next season when we are more prepared.

It comes back to not being able to last the pace against the top teams. We are getting better and can match them for many periods of the game but if we get to the group stages of CL i can easily see it being too much for the players and them going to pieces and finishing bottom of the group with nothing.

I'm probably just being way too pessimistic, but as they say, you need to walk before you can run.

If we can keep going in the UEFA and knock out some quality European sides then i'll be a bit more optimistic.

I just think another years experience in the UEFA and then CL will be the best thing overall.
