Statement Signing

Oh Gary Gary, Gary Gary Gary Gary Lineker
Used to love hearing that ring out around Goodison.
Was fantastic at the tunnel end at Wembley, half time when he scored against the RS, was deafening.
Definitely my big time statement.

I wonder if someone can tell me how many games he went without scoring when we first bought him. I thought it was about 4 or 5 and I remember his signing being questioned, I'm honestly not sure. Off topic I admit.

I don't count Lineker - we were the best team in Europe when we bought him. We didn't need a statement - we were improving an already brilliant team.

True,we were Champions and a great move for him but I seem to remember he was heavily linked with United and the RS too so it was quite a coup.

I think the RS were worried he was too similar a player to Rush, and United already had Hughes and Whiteside on the way up.

Brazilian teenager Pedro Neves, known as Pepe, has said that his recent move to Everton is something he has dreamed about from a young age.

The 15-year-old, who started out at Corinthians, moved to England with his family and joined Charlton Athletic after impressing the club in a trial at the age of 12.

After a couple of years with the Red Robins, he earned a move to Merseyside and Everton, which he has said is a dream come true.

“My expectation of playing at Everton is to win many titles, to be able to develop my football, to learn more and more,” he explained to Globo Esporte.

“The difference for Charlton is that Everton has a large structure, all the coaches were former club players, they are famous.

“So it has everything so that I can learn new things, more and more, and always evolve. I spent two years at Charlton, I did well and stood out. And that opportunity came now, which was good for my family too.

“I love these challenges, especially with a big club like this, which has great players like Lukaku and Mirallas. It’s a dream, it’s a dream that I have since I was a child.”

The youngster seems to have a bright future ahead of him, as he has been called up into both the Brazil and Portugal Under 15 squads and he will soon have to choose he wishes to represent.

When he moved from Brazil to England, Neves had to adapt to a slightly different style of football than he was used to playing back at home.

“At first it was a little different, when I got here I was watching everyone running, running… And I said, “How do these guys have that physicality?” They run a lot,” he said.

“Then I learned more and more, getting used to it, and since I’ve been here for three years, I’ve gotten used to it. I’m well used to here, but what I take from Brazil is the skills. My main characteristic is to attack, seek the goal and give assists to always help my team.”

The young striker will be hoping that his dream move to Everton will develop his talent so that he can one day represent the Toffees and Brazil’s senior sides one day.

which transfer in all your years as a blue felt like the most significant statement signing, for better of worse (or both)

boldest positive statement for me was Bob Latchford
most negative statement Davide Ginola

Must be getting old!......but I remember Latchford, Dobbo, Pejic, Colin Todd, Bruce Rioch, Asa Hartford, Duncan MacKenzie (is Magic!) - as a young kid with the RS winning everything in sight I thought we could compete. We nearly did...

Lukaku in recent imes most certainly, and Kanchelskis as well.

Before that, I would say Tony Cottee. Breaking the British transfer record was and is always significant, and in those pre-Sky days, I remember that being deemed newsworthy enough to make the 9'Clock News, it being reported that we had beaten Arsenal to sign him. I remember being pleased in a sort of smug way, because we were as good as, if not better than, any of the big boys then. It was Everton acting in a way I expected them to, no more no less.

Negative statement, that's very hard to say. I don't think clubs sign players to make a negative statement, certainly not intentionally so. There have been some leftfield signings certainly, but that's not the same thing. A depressing period was when we were signing players like Bobby Williamson and John O'Kane, no disrespect to them but looking back at teamsheets in that period in the 90s we were lucky to stay up.

Sorry dude. I'm saying the same thing right underneath you. Didn't notice at the time mate. Cottee WAS exciting and Huge at the time.

It was just the 2, but Durrant was a good player as well. I really wanted us to sign him.

Amokachi felt like a massive signing after the world cup, and our 1st £3m signing if I recall.

He was paraded on pitch before our midweek home game vs Forest, in his snazzy Purple Suit, Danny boy played on the Tannoy, and he promised that he would do his famous dance when he scored.

Made his debut vs QPR the following Saturday, Scored, and Unsworth wrestled him to the floor before he could do his celebration.

He was a strange signing Amo. Extremely fast, powerful and did some great things but other times looked well out of his depth. He always tried though, and of course he goes down in folklore thanks to completely ignoring Royle and subbing himself on in the semi.

Great story

I'll always love Amo for the Semi. Not just the goals but the story too. Out of his depth at times, yes. Don't much care though. Worth it for that alone.
