The very first ship you see in Episode IV A New Hope (the Tantive IV rebel cruiser being chased by the Star Destroyer) was the original Millennium Falcon. It was deemed to look too much like the Eagles from Space 1999, so they canned that idea for the major ship in the film. While eating a hamburger, someone came up with the design they went with. Glad they did!
