Stadium tours

So I had a few friends visiting over from Portugal last week. Thought it was the perfect opportunity to finally fully convert them into Evertonians. So I called the club to book a stadium tour for us. Apparently, these aren't done in the off season and will only restart in August.

I know we aren't the best at promoting ourselves but this is ridiculous. Any sort of logical explanation for stopping these in the Summer when there's loads of tourists around Liverpool?

There's loads of work going on in the stadium in the off season, plus they have rented out the pitch for people to play on i.e. corporate events etc...

I understand that can be a reason, but surely we could find ways around it? I doubt our lovely neighbours for instance stop doing the tours throughout the off season.

It's far from ideal but I think things like health and safety may play a part. There's loads of work going on in the ground this summer, such as some of the toilet blocks being ripped out and upgraded, the flood lights are being upgraded too, as well as the pitch being replaced with a new synthetic one. You're probably wondering how I know this mundane information. In my uni a couple of months ago we had the head of facilities management at Goodison and Finch Farm do a guest lecture. Throughout the summer it really is all hands on deck to get ready for the next season. Here's the post I did if you want to read it:

Couldn't be bothered making another thread and this seemed the most appropriate thread to post this stuff.

I was in uni today and we had a guest lecturer, the head of facilities management for Everton, who is in charge with looking after the day to day running of Finch Farm and Goodison Park.

A few interesting facts I thought I'd share:
  • The chef that cooks for the players travels with the team everywhere they go to avoid food poisoning as much as possible. This person is based at Finch Farm and cooks all food for the players and is separate from the catering at Goodison Park which is outsourced.

  • There is a pitch at Finch Farm which is a 100% replica of the one at Goodison Park.

  • Finch Farm practically runs itself it is so modern.

  • The club will be spending £250k upgrading floodlights this summer, as it is mandatory for the PL and UEFA.

  • The pitch that was laid in the summer is a combination of plastic grass and real grass and is guaranteed for 10 years, whereas the pitch would usually be changed at the end of every season. This gives Everton the opportunity to rent out the pitch for the first few weeks of the summer, which has been completely fully booked already. Pitch cost £500k to install, and costs £10k each year to make it suitable for the new season, as opposed to the £100k it cost to replace the grass pitch each year.

  • All the managers in the league conduct their press conferences on a Friday, whereas Martinez always conducts his on a Thursday. Why? To maximise media exposure.

  • There are now ice baths in the changing rooms which each player will use straight after the game. Temperature 2 degrees. 'Kinell!

  • Recyclable waste will be 'baled' on site and sold on, as opposed to paying someone to take the waste away.

  • See those LED advertising hoardings around the pitch? We share them with Liverpool as they are horrendously expensive. A company will dismantle and install from one ground to another as there is never a time when there is a game on at Goodison and Anfield at the same time.

  • On May 5th a new entrance to Goodison Park will be unveiled.
Works planned for Summer 2014:
  • Bigger players lounge.

  • Renovation of Bullens Road toilets.

  • Renovate corporate offices (because of the hideous crest last season).
The future:
  • Upgrade internal areas of the catering zones so they are more appealing, and will be similar to that of in the Park End stand. Facilities manager trying to make a business case to Sodexo as it could potentially bring more people in earlier before the match.

  • Club's priority is to move still. 1 or 2 sites in the city being considered. We may know more within the next 6-12 months. As a result the club are reluctant to spend too much money on infrastructure within the stadium if it is not essential or does not provide a quick repayment.

  • The stadium design is much the same as the one for Kirkby, with some elements updated. This will save on design costs.

So, most of that will be totally uninteresting to most people, but though I'd share it anyway.

Have you been on a stadium tour before? If you haven't then I'd definitely recommend it. The lady who leads you around has an incredible knowledge of the club!

This must be a new thing not doing them in the summer. I went on the tour in around 2007 maybe 2008 in the summer, I remember this because we weren't allowed on the pitch because it had just been relayed for the new season.

I imagine it's probably do to with insurance. After the season ends etc.

Yet another opportunity missed. It's not just the income from the tour but people tend to use the shop as we'll.

Just googled and tours right through the summer at analfield.

Would of been nice to start your tour in the shop, spend some money, walk through the gates by Dixie and commence on your tour.

Once completed you could return to whatever part of the world you are from and spread the word......

If only eh!!!!!

Was Dave Hickson last time I went on a stadium tour, obviously a long time back like.

Haven't been on one yet btw no so was looking forward to it as well. Really should have done it before mind, will probably do it early next season.

That's an interesting post, thanks. Maybe it's only this Summer then that they won't be happening as there seems to be a lot of things going on?

Go over to Old Trafford and see the crowds that goes through their stadium tour on every day, except match day.
Then they buy merchandise, and lunch or drinks at the café.
Ridiculous that Everton don't run these all year if you ask me.

Possibly. When I went it was January I think so I can't say from experience. And no probs mate.

Liverpool also do tours of melwood in the summer as well. I know its a case of supply and demand but surely one a day would not be too much to ask, leaflet all the hotels and the cruise ships, even offer a free bus to / from the city centre.

generally tourists will spend a few quid in the shop after doing the tour too.

Problem is Everton don't attract anywhere near the number of people to these events as Liverpool and United do.
