Gravitational Waves have been detected. This is massive news in physics.

Physicists have announced the discovery of gravitational waves, ripples in spacetime first anticipated by Albert Einstein a century ago.

“We have detected gravitational waves. We did it,” said David Reitze, executive director of the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (Ligo), at a press conference in Washington.

The announcement is the climax of a century of speculation, 50 years of trial and error, and 25 years perfecting a set of instruments so sensitive they could identify a distortion in spacetime a thousandth the diameter of one atomic nucleus across a 4km strip of laserbeam and mirror.

The phenomenon was detected by the collision of two black holes. Using the world’s most sophisticated detector, the scientists listened for 20 thousandths of a second as the two giant black holes, one 35 times the mass of the sun, the other slightly smaller, circled around each other.

At the beginning of the signal, their calculations told them how stars perish: the two objects had begun by circling each other 30 times a second. By the end of the 20 millisecond snatch of data, the two had accelerated to 250 times a second before the final collision and dark merger.

The observation signals the opening of a new window on to the universe.

Dunno mate, just thought I'd post it here to look dead clever. :blush:

It's not a practical breakthrough as it where, so there are no immediate applications. It does fully validate one of the cornerstones of General Relativity, proven mathematically but now empirically observed. What it will mean in future is more exciting as physicists can begin to unravel how gravity is 'felt' and transmitted through the universe and between objects and investigate the properties of the cosmos that aren't observable through optical or radio observations. It's also shown the discovery of a binary black hole system and their merging. It may even mean that we are able to detect data from the first nanoseconds of the big bang - i.e. the creation of the known universe.
So defo noble prize stuff!

More interested in the start of the unknown universe ie dimensional relativity and the nature of time itself but this a vindication of Einstein's theories ...how the F... did he think of these ideas ??
 
A stunning new image of the Milky Way galaxy has been captured by the APEX Telescope in Chile.

The full area of the galactic plane visible from the southern hemisphere has been mapped at sub-millimetre wavelengths – between infrared light and radio waves.

The APEX Telescope, based 5,100 metres above sea level in Chile’s Atacama region, allows astronomers to study the cold universe – that is, gas and dust only a few tens of degrees above absolute zero (-273.15C). The APEX data shows up in red, while the background blue image was imaged at shorter infrared wavelengths by Nasa’s Spitzer Telescope.

Sounds nerdy - but the result is stunningly beautiful

I want aliens but I want us to spot then from so far away that we dont get eaten.

Or they are friendly and not xenomorphs / predator / kryptonians

Although even if we were friendly we'd probably die out from their version of the cold.

Or they would die from our cold and think we assassinated them and declare war.


What am I even going on about
