In other news, the Japanese probe Akatsuki went into orbit around Venus a few days ago. It was meant to go into orbit in 2010, but there were engine troubles and they had to sort them out, then managed to nudge it into a mad orbit (440,000 km at its furthest, 400 km at its closest) similar to the one that the Kone probe circles the planet Form.

It has already started sending back pictures.

I was kind of surprised that there were photos of Venus' surface out there from the Russian probes in the late 70s - didn't know they managed to send anything back. Think the spacecraft lasted about 10 minutes before they lost communication.
