Barack Obama: US will partner with private companies to send humans to Mars by 2030s
The United States will partner with private companies to send humans to Mars by the 2030s, President Barack Obama announced on Tuesday.
"Instead of eagerly awaiting the return of our intrepid explorers, we'll know that because of the choices we make now, they've gone to space not just to visit, but to stay -- and in doing so, to make our lives better here on Earth," he
wrote in an article for CNN.

One of the primary challenges of sending humans to Mars is determining how to provide sufficient food and water for a months or years-long mission.
Mr Obama said Nasa would work with private companies to, "build new habitats that can sustain and transport" astronauts for longer missions.
He compared the mission
to Mars with the effort to land humans on the moon, and said it would take a "giant leap" to reach the planet.
The president did not specify which companies the US planned to partner with.

Blue Origin, a spaceflight company founded by Jeff Bezos, the billionaire Amazon founder, is also competing with SpaceX and may set its sights on Mars.
Mr Obama said partnership with private companies would be required for the mission to succeed.
He said he hoped future space travel will inspire the next generations, in the same way the moon landing had inspired him.
"One of my earliest memories is sitting on my grandfather's shoulders, waving a flag as our astronauts returned to Hawaii," he wrote.
