Do We Need A ‘Drop Second?’ The Worrying Reason Why Earth May Be Speeding Up After Decades Of Slowing Down
Adjusting atomic clocks could soon become a waste of time.

In addition to the melting glaciers, I have a feeling that extracting trillions tons of oil and coal during centuries must also be having an effect on the Earth's mass. And while loosing a second doesn't seem like a big deal, we should be concerned that depletion of ice at the glaciers and the extraction of organic fossils may trigger a series of geological events that may be put our whole existence in jeopardy![]()

Sorry for my pessimism, Spadge. My faith in the human race is not very vigorous this morning. Getting up at 4 am this morning may be the blame lolMaybe we will need these parallel universes as a sci-fi type lifeboat!
Oh don't worry, Sassy. If you are feeling a bit down pop over to the Current Affairs forum, the residents will soon have you singing the joys of springSorry for my pessimism, Spadge. My faith in the human race is not very vigorous this morning. Getting up at 4 am this morning may be the blame lol
Thank for understanding. I'm not feeling down (that's my usual human outlook) just sleepy but I already have a strong tea in hand. I have already been sneaking there and I'm not sure if I will be singing the joys of spring yet lolOh don't worry, Sassy. Don't panic. We'll have killed ourselves off through war, a pandemic, famine and/or drought long before a geological event can.In addition to the melting glaciers, I have a feeling that extracting trillions tons of oil and coal during centuries must also be having an effect on the Earth's mass. Unfortunately that's a very accurate outlook. Tbf, I'm not panicking for myself but it makes me sad that future generations may not have the opportunity to enjoy the beautiful planet we were given.Don't panic. I think it is inevitable and the reason we haven't found life anywhere else. A planet has finite resource and they will get used up eventually. By the time we realise, it is too late.Unfortunately that's a very accurate outlook.
