After the fallout of the kirkby decision it's nice to appreciate what we still have.. Goodison Park.

The South Korean media have really picked up on the group of death with North Korea facing Portugal, Brazil and Ivory Coast.

On all the sports channels there is wall to wall coverage of North Korea playing Portugal at Goodison park in 1966.

The commentators are saying how the Everton fans took them in as one of their own. They are really warm in their praise of the people of Liverpool.

It makes me so proud to part of such a knowledgeable and ace set of supporters as Evertonians.

I remember reading that in 1966 the North Koreans were first billeted at Loyola Hall in Rainhill. But all the religious iconography around the place freaked them out and they went and stayed elsewhere.

The Brazil Portugal game at Goodison in the 1st round was watched by 62,000 with Portugal winning 3-1 with recent visitor to Goodison, Eusebio scoring twice. The game was notoriously "dirty" with both teams kicking lumps out of each other, particularly the Portuguese treatment of Pele.

In the You tube clip below (3 minutes into the film) Pele gets fouled twice in succession and is badly injured. The camera pans around the ground and at 3.08 it focuses on an old heavily lined face, anxiously watching the game. That guy, in his flat cap is my grand-father. His Father played for Everton in the 1897 FA Cup Final.

I'm too young to remember the '66 finals, but know that Korea took a 3-0 lead against Portugal, at Goodison of course, before a Eusebio inspired Portugal came back to win 5-3, what a comeback that must have been, I remember reading the Korean team had some really strange names, and the Old Lady even held the semi-final between the Soviet Union and West Germany, I don't think us or Anfield look like being likely arenas to be considered for the 2018 bid.

It seems strange that Korea have a better finals record than Scotland or Wales, not by number of particpations but in terms of progress.
