Socialised Healthcare

Statistically you're mad to oppose it if you're poor because someone else will pay your way. If you're well off you'll be paying for yourself and others.

Doesn't seem particularly just to me.

Same applies if you're unhealthy/healthy. Either way you're getting some people paying for an awful lot less than they use and some paying for an awful lot more than they use.

Doesn't seem particularly fair to me.

Healthcare is a massive responsibility and should be a high standard to all.

I'd rather that responsibility is of the governments than big corporations.

Every second ad on US TV seems to be from a pharmaceutical company. People's health is something that profit shouldn't come into.

Of course healthcare is a massive responsibility. A few things to consider though.

Demographically western society is getting older, and with retirement ages not rising as quickly as average ages there is a rapidly increasing part of the population that is taking out of the system without putting in (the retired). That these people are also those that are using healthcare the most means that this simple fact will bankrupt all socialized healthcare services around the world because there won't be enough working people to pay for the healthcare of the non-working.

That's the main argument against it. My personal argument against it is that your health is your responsibility, not anyone elses and certainly not the governments. People know full well that smoking is bad for them, that drinking too excess is bad for them, that a poor diet is bad for them, that a lack of exercise is bad for them etc. and yet still they do these things. It's not a lack of information here, it's a lack of willpower to do something about it.

We expect driving safely to give us cheaper car insurance than Billy Boy Racer down the street so why should healthcare be any different?

You're such a cold blooded economist Mr W.

Insurance and healthcare should be two different things mate, if you're preaching the rights of a capitalist state then the smoking, drinking and [Poor language removed] diet is you exercising your hard fought liberty, non?

We're part of a largely imperfect society so these things happen. What shouldn't happen is that any modern society advocates excellent medical care for the rich and not for the (still tax paying) poor. The same good standard of healthcare should be available to all and if those who earn really well want to enhance it even further, (NHS v BUPA per se) then that option will still exist.

And this comes from someone who has to pay for healthcare insurance.
