How you can compare that to Donovan is astonishing. Baines has tasted European football albeit briefly also.
The premier league is up there as one of the best leagues in the world and Baines most certainly plays against some of the best being in the premiership. The MLS is nowhere close.
Sure wasn't my point that Donovan should have stayed in the premier league play on a bigger stage. Staying with Everton and playing other premiership teams would have shown everyone how good he is like he did for that brief spell.
...
Damn you guys are so defensive when it comes to Donovan. Nobody is knocking him here, we are all saying how we would have liked to see more of him on a bigger stage...
I was using a question to illustrate how this notion of 'ambition' in this case seems to have more to do with our own perspective and not the player at all. Reidy seems to have picked that up immediately, my apologies if that showed to others as blindly defending Landon.
I've been dealing in reality (Donovan under a long contract and Everton not willing/able to free him from it). I'm frustrated with people equating that reality with Donovan lacking ambition though. I (like most here, and it sounds like you are in this camp) would have loved to see LD stay with Everton and play on a bigger stage. That option was just never available (with Everton, though it was rumored with ManCity).
Regarding Baines:
Personally, I don't think Baines is lacking ambition either, but using your logic, he is. My question was inferring it, and Reidy explicitly called it out - man u fans probably all think that right now, and that is why I posed the question. It has to do with your frame of reference.
You are right.
Baines has tasted European football, UEFA/Europa. So has Donovan.
Donovan has STARTED in both Champion's League and World Cup football. Baines hasn't played in either.
Does that make Donovan better? NO. But Saying Baines has tasted Europa is less valid than I think you assumed.
