Love him or loathe him there is no denying his achievements in football. This weekend sees him celebrate 25yrs at Manure. Will we ever see anybody even come close to what he's achieved? I doubt it. Surely he must go down as the greatest football manager ever. Congratulations on 25yrs Sir Alex. You have my respect and admiration. I salute you.

can one of you nice modz merge this please!! Not sure what happened to get two of the same but hey ho!! Cheers :-)

It's been a fantastic achievement without doubt, and it would appear unlikely that we'll ever see a manager stay at one major club for so long ever again.

I don't think he's the greatest ever though. For a club with United's resources to have only won the CL twice isn't great, especially when you think in '99 that was a freaky result given the nature of the two last minute goals, and their '08 win was on pens.

Don't get me wrong, I'd love Everton to have won a couple of CL's like that, but if we're looking at the best ever I think Fergie falls a little bit short.

Pretty impressive.

Yeah, but he's never won the Liverpool Senior Cup.......pfft.....

Funnily enough, I doubt Shankly or Clough could have achieved what he's achieved if they were in his position, and yet I doubt he'd have been able to achieve what they did had he been in theirs.

Begs the question. In your opinion, who is/was the best then?

Probably Rinus Michels. He achieved great things with Holland, Ajax and Barca, but his influence has spread so far. The Ajax of van Gaal had his prints all over it, as did the Barca teams of Cruyff, Rijkaard and Guardiola.

Ajax and Barca are no Derby County and Nottingham Forest, though.

Would not disagree with that. Funny though, his name rarely crops up in "who is the best" discussions. The default seems to be trophies, as opposed to influence/legacy. I would guess that Fergie has more pots, but far less influence. Might be wrong though.
