Single malts

gotta admit i dont know what that means, are those all with smoke flavour, i like that

All Laphroaigs are really smoky.

The cask strength is the same whisky, matured for 10 years, but bottled at cask strength, usually 55-58%abv.

The "Quarter" undergoes a second maturation in quarter-sized casks, which means more wood is in contact with the liquid, which imparts a different flavour to the spirit. It's bottled at 48%abv. The "quarter" doesn't have an age statement, either.

If you like the ten year old you'd love either of them.

No, is that the one that's bottled at cask strength but younger than the usual 16. It's a 12 year old or something IIRC?

Not heard much good about it.

I really like the 16 yo, but I think it's overpriced.
I think it's a 12, but I thought it was the business. Deffo worth trying, it's a good 'un.

Quarter cask was something to do with its storage in the distillery if I remember correctly (see Blue 1 above) and its an attempt to get back to what it would have been like in the 1910's (like Glenmorangie's Finealta) but Laphroaig is a smokey one. James Bond drank Laphroaig and not Martitnis in the original novels.

Apparently the story behind the "quarter" casks was that they were possible to transport by pack-mule thus enabling the distiller to avoid the taxman back in the old days.

Ahh! Was up in Glenmorangie in June, had a bottle called Finealta, possibly only available from their distillery shop - uses a recipe they found from 1910. Not surprisingly, we've finished it off, it was superb even without the historical novelty factor.

Seeing as Finners asked me via PM, this is pretty much my holy grail of single malts, it doesn't get any better than this -

At what point do you start appreciating/understanding whiskey?

I'm 17 and have tried a fair few different ones (good parents, I swear), but they all taste equally horrible to me.

It takes a while - same with olives - but one day you realise. Drink of the Gods. Hint: Try it with a little touch of water. It releases the flavours and makes it a less "harsh" experience.
