Thing is, the mid-80s sides were that good and so confident in what they were doing that you thought the trophy winning would last forever. I can even remember giving the last Charity Shield a miss (v Coventry?) totally confident there'd be another to follow the following year.

It is the most amazing feeling to win a trophy. It makes you push out your chest and strut, with a smug grin all over yer face!
I can't understand why our great club doesn't treat ALL competitions with the same respect and try to win those we can.
For the moment the League is out of reach, but the FA and League cups are both well within our capability and we should strive to win those (including the UEFA cup too)
I have always said that winning a trophy is paramount to league positions and I will always feel that way.
Take this season for instance, we may finish mid-table (at best on current form!) but if we won a trophy none of that would matter - the season would be a success.
A club is judged on it's trophies and it has been way too long since we last won one. That needs sorting ASAP!
In my lifetime we have won numerous trophies and been in the final of numerous others so I am used to us challenging for major honours, this trend needs to return for the good of all our fans, particularly the younger ones who have no experience of being a winner.

Money. We are set up to achieve a respectable league finish and leave the domestic cups to the money teams. It keeps the owners content and we just tread water whilst trying to compete for more global exposure in this over bloated cash rich industry. I detest modern football and the Sky media focus on top 4. Reading this thread makes me yearn to go back to pre Premier League. I feel sorry for those who have known of nothing other than the Sky era.

I seem to recall it took the team a similar length of time. The players told the coach driver to drive slowly.
They must have improved the roads since then because I've been to Norwich since and It didn't take anywhere near that amount of time to get there and back

It can't just be turned around either - we are being permanently left behind. We genuinely may not win another trophy...ever. Unless the big teams break away, in which case winning anything domestic will be seen as similar to the league cup and even with the cups the big ones will probably still be allowed in

It's probably not too late but there needs to be big change. Maybe we need to flirt closer with relegation this year to wake people up - have it go down to April or something. That's the only good that can come of this season - mid table safety will just mask our very long term problems

Its the best feeling in the world mate, especially after winning a cup. The journey home, the the following day the crowds lining the street and the atmosphere when the open top bus comes into view and the gleaming silver is held aloft.

Even better when its 3 trophies on show - League, Charity Shield and European Cup winners Cup

It's all about mentality though. We enter competitions with no intention of winning them. We throw away the league cup every year, we invariably go out of the FA cup if we meet premier league opponents away from home, and even when we come top of our group with a favourable draw we still give ourselves no chance of winning the Europa League.

Liverpool meanwhile consider themselves favourite for the Europa League and expect to win it. Some European team that we would fancy ourselves to beat will probably win the Europa this year whereas we'll have convinced ourselves in an earlier round that we've got no chance and will bow out.

Even in the 90s the ladt vestiges of trophy winning mentality was there. No matter how bad the team you always fancied we could have a cup run. Now it seems its been so long that even with a much better squad the players seem to have this mindset that trophies are impossible.

This is the best squad we've had whilst I've been alive (23), if we don't win any silverware soon then there will be absolutely nothing to show for it. To think that a player like Baines will never win a trophy is quite sad.

Imagine being in a raucous Goodison (still terraces in those days) after a victory against QPR, two or three games to spare, and every single Blue - including yourself, of course - singing "Hand it over! Hand it over! Hand it over, Liverpool!"

Imagine that.

That's how great it is.

This would just be amazing. Great post. :)

I don´t remember the last league win, as I was too young, but I was definitely already then watching games every weekend on RTE in Ireland and had chosen the blue team out of the red and blue teams that seemed to be on every weekend at that time. Can remember the 89 final...unfortunately.

So the first and only time I saw us win a trophy was the 95 cup final, as it would be for many on here. Watched it at home and then went to stay in a mates house out in the country. His house was an age away from the nearest shop and I remember taking a football and going for a walk down the country lanes to the shop on my own kicking the ball and just smiling away to myself and almost laughing. Pure bliss!

As bad as things are now I still think we will all have that feeling again, and under this manager.

Question to the older Evertonians on this board. What does it feel like winning Silverware with Everton ? I can't conceive of winning the Premier League Title with this current Everton side. I don't even know if It's going to be possible in the next 10 years. The closest feeling I remember was the FA Cup final vs Chelsea in 09. THat was an amazing run that I think started against Middlesborough in the 3rd Round.

Is it a nice sticky warm feeling inside?

Oh Man, it makes you feel so good especially when you walk the streets of the city. never mind FA cup, but the league, You Are The Champions, in the earlier days would have played 42 games so you are the best of the bunch and best of the best.

20 years since our last trophy, we should put all efforts into winning europa now, we're not going to get into the top 6, we're too good to go down, I say make Europa a priority, if young boys knock us out I think I'm going to give up on football

I think you will be giving up on football then, young boys won last 7 games before the break scoring 15 & only conceding 5. Also don't fancy us on artificial turf

i was 8 when we won the FA Cup, when the final whistle went...i ran screaming out of the house and ran down the road screaming EVERTONNNNNNNNNNN for about 30 minutes.

Missed them lifting the cup etc and made a fool out of my 8 year old self.

Summary: Great.
