Still find having eggs in the fridge is the weirdest thing in that fridge
It's the way eggs are prepared for sale in the US apparently. The cleaning process breaks down a protective barrier that normally prevents them going off so they have to be refrigerated. Probably bleach them or something mad like that.

Over here I think the farmer just wipes 'em on their jeans arse pocket thus retaining, and possibly enhancing, the protective barrier left by the chicken's ringpiece.

This is spot on. In the US all eggs are in the refrigerated section and you're supposed to do the same at home. I got some laying hens in my backyard and I don't wash them so they sit out on my counter and are fine. I usually say uni-hole but I like ring piece better Claus.
