Should i have offered the money and should it have been accepted?

Was i right to offer the money for the meal and should they have accepted?

Ok lads I want some feed back to decide if i have done the right thing here and should a couple I am friends with accepted the money, apologies if this is a little long winded. A couple were paying for our Christmas lunch at a nice hotel near where we live., the wife of the couple told myself & my Mrs they wanted to pay for it at a cost of £180 which was very nice of them, so just under £90 each. They were also paying for 2 other lads who are friends of mine that were going too, 3 out of the 4 of us are Irish living in the UK and we (Myself the Mrs and the 2 lads) always have Christmas lunch out together since getting to know each other but last year with covid we had it with this couple in their home who we would all be friendly with and we have got to know them since moving over to the UK.
Anyway one of the lads decided to go home for Christmas, he had not been home in 7 years for Christmas, So last week he went and told the wife in the couple who were paying for the meals, that he had got Christmas off late and decided he would go home for it, long story short she was not too happy and made a comment to me about how these meals cost money the following day. So with all this covid about at the moment i got cold feet myself at the weekend and not wanting to fall out with the couple I went down and told them face to face that myself and my Mrs would not be going to the hotel for Christmas day lunch but i said i would give/offer them the £180 back, basically the cost of myself and the Mrs meal on Christmas day, it was taken by them, fair enough i offered it but I was just thinking after was i right to offer? I actually think I was but I believe if i offered to pay for a meal for somebody else I know I would not have accepted it. Just wondering what are others opinion on this?

You were right to offer the money and they were right to take it if you CBA going.
