Shortage of strikers could cost us, warns Phil Jagielka

He said he believed we'd be stronger coming out of the window, not that we were at the end of it.

I believe he just didn't have the money to react to the Oviedo and Lukaku injuries. It wasn't about lateness in the window to act, and it wasn't about him being satisfied...it was just the same deal as last year: owners and their CEO telling him they wouldn't budge on their financial plan to take more money in each window from player sales - that is now a fact of life in the affairs of this club.

It's not the manager's fault that he's trusted these cowboys in two windows to honour at least their miserly 'commitment' to allow him to spend what he brings in. However, if we go through the summer window spending only what he brings in rather than a very decent net spend alarm bells will be ringing. I'll suspect he's seen how not rocking the boat at Everton and 'overachieving' (as his predecessor did) is a decent way of bagging an elite club to move onto and he's willing to put up with the board's parsimony.

Big summer ahead for Roberto; he'd do well to demonstrate he has a huge pair if he's to continue to carry the vast majority of fans with him. Charm or no charm, not many are going to be willing to put up with another Uncle Tom like Moyes for years to come.

Then he lied about that - he said clearly he had the money to spend if he wanted it.

Martinez isn't made out of Teflon here mate, the buck stops with him too.

The summer activity after what roberto has publicly stated about havong money will be huge for his ongoing relationship with us all

If theirs no significant net spend then he lied about the money simple as
If a player who makes us all sit and go 'get in bobby lad' isnt signed then he lied about why he didnt spend in jan also

If come summer without selling we go.out and buy lukaku or someone else that we can see why they werent available in jan, then he shos we can trust him again

Balls all in bobbies court now in the summer

He's already done that really hasn't he? He said he would be looking for replacements for Kone and Gibson in the last window, instead we replaced neither and the 2 players that were brought in only replaced the 2 also leaving. So, in essence, he has left us 2 players short and that is even after knowing that Lukaku and Oviedo would be out also for lengthy periods.

The whole thing stinks of massive BS, as every window does with the useless shysters in charge.

At first though mate, it would have been bedlam

There could be a perfectly good striker who we didn't take a gamble on for that very reason

There's very few "sure things" out there

I mean Traore might end up being great, but maybe it would have been better getting a slighly less well known player on loan who we knew we could use right away rather than gambling on an injured "name" PLAYER?

What cos the fans wouldn't like it?

Please, no manager ever thinks of that when trying to sign a player.

Before we erect a cross for Martinez on the left hand side of Kenwright, I think we should at least wait until the summer window. As he's clearly intimated that he's keeping his powder dry until then.

This summer window differs to previous ones, as we'll have received the full additional £20m+ incremental revenue from the TV deal by the close of it. On top of the funds generated by sales in the last 2 windows. The books are now balanced (as proven by the recent accounts) so there can be absolutely no plausible reason or excuse for the manager not having a sizeable budget at his disposal come July.

I dearly hope we see a summer spend of £10M net expenditure (a very reasonable hope given what's happened in the recent past), but I just cant see it. I believe we'll see a break even on players sold and players bought.

I like Martinez a lot; he's a breath of fresh air and he's a great public face to the whole organisation. But he's just one individual and if he plays along with the game of these mobsters in the board room all bets are off as far as having any belief in him. We've been down this road before of fresh starts and 'doing it without money' and tightening belts this window t have a 'good window next summer'. That bird just wont fly anymore.

You're suggesting a manager wouldn't rather get a "name" player in than an unknown?

It's a built in excuse. If the player does poorly, you can say "well, he was widely touted" or "He has a proven track record"

You bring someone in without a reputation and then all the spotlight goes on you if it goes pete tong

That reply rules out him believing he had cash which, when desperately needed, was then *not there*.

I dont know if that is right or wrong. I'm just, at this stage, giving the benefit of the doubt to RM. I must admit, though, that anything said by senior management at Everton is pretty difficult to believe, so I wouldn't be surprised if you are right.

Still, there's a hierarchy of blame in this situation and I refuse to elevate our manager to anywhere near the top of that list at this stage. We all know where the problem lies at this club, and it isn't with a new manager trying his best to do his job.

If Troare was not fit why name him as a sub? Why not give one of ypung strikers a crack instead of Osman or Naismith?

As mentioned in a different thread.

There could be numerous reasons mate. Could have picked up a niggle warming up, Martinez (rightly or wrongly) may have just decided it wasn't the right time, no matter what we think.

Could have been lots of reasons.
