It isn't a silly comparison at all. 22 is young for a CB and most haven't seen enough of him to make the call.
Silly is saying he won't make it. If that was the case Roberto would have shown him the door.
He's too slow and cumbersome..... Nice lad and a tryer but will get raped against Any quick tricky striker.... I've seen milk turn quicker than the lad.

@Kurt, @Brennan etc, how often have you seen him play? honestly, full games in the last year?

Far too sensible a question!

Just give the lad a few decent runs out and let him demonstrate if he is up to standard for the enlarged squad that we will require for 2014/15 campaign.

I firmly believe that this young man has determination and ability and that he will rise to the challenge that RM has laid down for him.

He has cheated death - he can conquer the challenge of the Premiership no problem!!

So based on that argument, you wouldn't take many a CB including Mertesacker..
Now you're being silly.... When a player just doesn't have it, you can see it, it doesn't make him a bad player at all.... Far from it, but he's not got that little bit extra to make it at the top..... That's not knocking the lad, it's being honest. Why blow smoke up his arse when it's not true ? I've also said on here that I hope he proves me wrong but I guess that bypassed you .

If he doesn't make it here then he'll make a decent Championship defender at worst, I reckon.

Still a much better living than most of us could dream of. I won't feel too bad for him!

I've seen quite a bit of him ( albeit on TV I admit) and have also spoken to a lad I know who's played against him a few times in the reserve league. He's big and strong yes but any decent manager would stick a fast tricky striker up against him and get one on one all the time. He'll probably have a decent career around the lower half of the prem or in the championship but I don't think he'll ever make it at Everton.

So apparently now it's scandalous to say that you don't think an Everton player will make the grade.

Nobody has slated him, nobody has said he's awful, he's had no abuse or any campaign against him like Mikey is suggesting (what on earth?), people are just stating they don't think he's good enough for us. Is there any great evidence to the contrary ? Martinez saying he likes the lad hardly counts btw, he also said he would like to keep Jelavic when it was fairly obvious he needed getting rid of and that he didn't fit Martinez's style whatsoever.

Stop it now..... You and your talking sense...... Whatever next ?

Bobby probably reckons he's not up to it, but is willing to give him a go in pre season. Obviously he's not going to say he doesn't rate him, as it might lead to someone putting in a bid for him..

It's not that it's scandalous, it just seems a bit too premature. Take this for example:

I've seen quite a bit of him ( albeit on TV I admit) and have also spoken to a lad I know who's played against him a few times in the reserve league. He's big and strong yes but any decent manager would stick a fast tricky striker up against him and get one on one all the time. You're saying you've only ever seen him on TV? Yet you're able to predict the difference between him developing into a player who can play 'lower half of the prem' (a very high level) or for us (presumably 'top 5/6 in prem'). The difference is negligible at this early part of his career, yet you can spot it through the evertonTV webcam. I don't mean to be off, but that IMO is why people react to the concrete/nailed on shouts of 'not good enough', especially when you consider the need for a big squad these days.

Bet he'll be released by Bobby tomorrow now with the press release 'not good enough'
