Shane Duffy

Barring Alcaraz, Duffy isn't going to dislodge any of our 3 best CB's is he, either from the starting 11 or the bench next season.

I like the lad, I think he'll make a decent premier league CB but it's pointless keeping him at his age just to be part of squads and play in U-21's. He needs to be out getting games at a proper level so I'd definitely send him out on loan and IF Burnley do want him then for obvious reasons I'd send him to them.

I wouldn't sell him that's for sure but he needs to carry on playing games like he as done at Yeovil at a good level to keep on fulfilling his potential.

Looking at this season we've had 3 out of 4 CBs injured, all 3 who are getting on in age. Not to mention Martinez likes being able to switch to 3 at the back, so having healthy CBs is pretty key to our squad. My gut feeling is that Distin and Alcaraz are a ticking time bomb. Credit to whoever said it in another forum (I think it was the Barry one) but I think they're hanging "on the edge of a cliff face" in regards to how much longer they can play at a high level. Some would argue Alcaraz is already gone. Distin going to lose his pace sometime or another and tbh Duffy might be better than a slow Distin.

I think if he stays he will get a good amount of playing time even if he doesn't displace Distin/Alcaraz through injuries and Europe. I don't want to sell him but if he's just going to go on loan all the time then we might as well ship him off.

So confused with Duffy.

I want him to be ace.

Everytime I saw him for Yeovil (3 or 3 this season) he made mistakes, but then he was playing for Yeovil.

So confused.

Been highest rated player in the Championship (or something) though.

I didn't really see any of Yeovils games this season but they were the busiest defense in the league so understandable that he'd make a few mistakes. I don't think Martinez used him in any of the pre-season games last year. Don't think he rates him which is a shame as I think he could be a better option than Alcaraz or an aging Distin. Also might offer something at corners

Good points here.

Remember him being badly at fault for a couple of goals against Southampton in the cup and its stuck in my mind, by all accounts he's done a decent job there, would love to see him make it here.

Roberto will know best and make the right decision.

He was at fault for the 2nd goal. It was No.3 McAllister who conceded the penalty but it was reported as Duffy. The commentator in this clip says it's Duffy so that's probably where it came from.

Pace is clearly the main concern. Would like to see him given a go though. Heading is something we really are not great at, at either end. Who knows, in the right partnership his lack of pace might not be a major hindrance.

Geez, even our loans handed Southampton free goals.

Biggest problem is like Mertsaker at Arsenal any game vs a team with pace we'd have to adjust the way we played or risk getting absolutely ripped apart on the Counter, and he has nowhere near the smarts of the Arsenal bloke yet which allows him to compensate at times for a lack of pace.

Simple fact is generally the worse a team is and the more it has to defend the better a player like Duffy will look, the weaknesses aren't exposed as much as they tend to be under pressure and the strengths are given more chance to be shown for the same reason.

He's been here a whilst and apparently a sound lad and all that, but lets not cloud the view that he is completely and utterly unsuited to both the style of play we now have adopted and the level we are competing at

And I don't mean to sound a dick in saying that as a few years ago under Moyes and the way we played I could actually see him becoming a starter, but times and things move on

This.

I have not seen much of Duffy, but from what i have seen he looks like a good old fashioned centre half. Strong in the air and likes a tackle. Not much finesse about him, which i think will ultimately be his downfall at Everton. Roberto has a style of play which means the centre half's either have to be good on the ball or have to be seen to be able to adapt. I think this pre-season will be make or break. If Roberto thinks Shane can embrace the new ball playing centre back then he may stick around, if not he could be on his way to free up a little wages and add 1 or 2 mil to the transfer 'warchest'
