Shane Duffy

First game of pre season. Give him time lids ffs.
Exactly. I have faith still that Duffy will be an excellent centre half for us given a good a run of games.

I've heard some say he just isn't that good and no run of games will change that but that's nonsense. There is nothing like playing a consistent run of games so you can only properly judge him after giving him a fair and decent chance in the team.

The question is will Martinez be brave enough to give him those games? If he starts off rusty and is responsible directly for conceding one or two goals, do you persevere and give him the run of games in the hope he improves or take him back out?

If he's not going to get a good run here, then the lad will definitely need to move on loan and get those run of games under his belt elsewhere because it's doing his career no good at all getting the odd game here and there for the stiffs.

If we get another defender in this window, he should be sent on loan so he doesn't go any more stale...i think it is just a matter of confidence and game time

Spot on mate.

Duffy played really well when it mattered and he had a run of Premier League games.

People making snap judgements on a kick-about in the Austrian sunshine need to get back to their games consoles rather than criticising our young players.

In those 3 games, although he did well utilizing his strengths and having his hand held the whole match by Heitinga, HiS flaws were there to see, mainly lack of pace and movement. That it didn't really cost us in those games was more luck than anything else. He WOULD be targeted and torn to shreds in the PL if he was playing every week!

I'm not judging him off one pre-season game but over 18 months of football. Once he plays more football, a few yrs worth at a lower level will his improvement in other areas make up for his weaknesses?? Hard to tell but he's not gonna get there with us.

hahaha, what? based on? hes still v young for a centre half

Based on what I've seen of the lad. Admittedly not an awful lot. But you can usually see quality potential in a couple of games or so. I prefer what I've seen of Stones.

I think he'll end up in the championship.

Once Distin, Jags and Heitinga are no longer about, I see Stones ahead of him and logically a couple more centre halfs will be purchased. Better than Duffy.

We'll only realise how good Duffy is when he leaves and plays great for somebody else

We've got something special with him. He should be third in line right now as far as CB goes. Heitinga is occupying that role because Martinez has to justify his salary

In terms of talent Heitinga is streaks ahead of Duffy. The thing with Heitinga is he doesn't want to be here and hasn't for over two seasons. He has a huge ego and thinks he's better than he is.

I think your bias towards young lads being brought through the club is showing Mikey. He's a good defender and hopefully will get better, but he needs regular chances to play away from the incredibly tough learning environment the league is. He's not third choice, he's maybe 5th or at best 4th and won't get the game time he needs to develop. Happy for him to do that at a level below us to learn his trade.

stones looks 3rd in line to me ie. if distin or jags are out he'll come in.

He's behind Jags,Distin,Heitinga, Alcaraz and Stones permitting all fit. He's 6th in line for me.

Needs to be out on loan to be playing he's got very little chance here.
