Shane Duffy

....there has been a lot of hype about this lad for a while, with folk clamouring for him to get a starting place and a run of games. Hopefully those demands will be tempered with more realism after today's performance against second rate opposition. Duffy will be in a queue behind Jagielka, Distin, Alcaraz and Heitinga and I wouldn't be surprised if we never see him start a competitive game for the Blues.

I'm not sure what you mean by second rate opposition mate :)

eggs in not liking youth player shock!

....I'd love to see a kid coming through, but I have watched a fair bit of Duffy and simply don't think he's good enough. Nobody will be as delighted as me if I'm proven incorrect but seeing is believing and I'm afraid I don't see what others do.

do you still think Barkley wont make it? I do agree on Duffy, from what I've heard the lad has too many mistakes in him

The lad needs a year out on loan - championship probably. This should have been last year but for one reason or anothet Moyes had to keep him round. Unfortunately a year wasted in this kids development.

....Barklay is a talent but I have my doubts. I can understand what Moyes meant when he said 'points are so valuable that he couldn't gamble on him'. His contributions are too fleeting and he needs to be contributing more to the overall effort. The only spark of encouragement he gave me was v Arsenal but I haven't been convinced beyond that, even when playing in his own age group. I have likened him to Tarabt, but again I would be chuffed to be proven wrong.

Honestly thought Duffy was better, I know it was our first game of pre-season but thought he was dreadful yesterday. Hope it was just him having a bad game and i'll put it down to lack of fitness.

The reason I thought he was good was when he had that spell in the first team a few years ago I thought he put a few decent shifts in and I believed that soon he would be on of our first choice centre halfs.

Plenty of players have stinkers in early pre-season. Not the right game to judge his future, although I do have my doubts. He looked a good prospect in the few PL games he started but in the four or five u21 games I saw last season he definitely did not look like he was above that level at all.

Whatever may be said about Moyes's conservatism, I don't think he simply failed to see a PL-ready player in Duffy.

People are judging based on his first half hour of the first preseason game. If you've watched him plenty in the reserves and don't rate him then fine but don't write him off because of yesterday. It's ridiculous!

This.

I've honestly not seen enough of him to make a proper judgement. He did very well in those few first team games he played a couple of seasons back, and doesn't seem to have pushed on from them for on reason or another.

There's still hope. It was criminal not to send him out on loan last season IMO.

been pretty vocal about Duffy in the wrong thread unfortunately.

If he was a world beater, given Moyes' resources he would have been getting a game.

He didnt play cos Moyes seen him every single day and didnt think he was good enough! Whether there is a YET after that sentence is almost down to duffy and how hard he wants to work.

Hes too young to give up all hope but he aint gonna be in our first team as a first choice this season, people are in dream land. He needs a year in the championship then we decide on him and either keep him or let him go.

He had a chance yesterday to show Martinez what Moyes was missing...fcuked it completely.

I was actually saying duffy not good enough long before yesterdays game. People just assume everyone jumps on a bandwagon after one game...some people dont, some people like to keep an eye on our kids and follow their development.

I agree he should have gone out last season...he should definately go out this season...but to do that we need cover which is why im totally behind RM going for another good CB

Duffy is a huge man and plays a rather simple defending game.
He is young, inexpereienced and last season in particular he played very little football, when he should have been on loan, playing every week.
A couple of seasons ago he missed a lot of football because of that horrific injury he suffered.
Last season at the same time in pre season he also looked very poor.I think he needs a lot of football to get up to speed with his game.

In summary. He could still be a very good defender, will never be the world beater that some predicted, but if he doesn't get a loan move and regular first team football this season, then I worry for his career.

I think Martinez will keep giving him chances. Which is what pre-season is about. We lost sight of that under the Man Utd manager's time in charge here.
