We don't usually play so many of them as we did yesterday though, do we?

I mean that under Moyes I don't remember a time when he played half a team of 19 year olds, even in preseason.

There would always be one or two, but would often be classed as Everton XIs. More reserve games with some first teamers in there.

Thought Duffy played great in the spell of "real" games he played.

Surely this makes judgement via the first practice game of the season in an experimental side thrown together gigantic cock business.

Def need to give him more games and time, he has good potential but needs game time now which will improve his confidence and sharpness. Def wouldnt sell.

I remain undecided but don't be making extreme conclusions with younger players playing the first game of pre-season ffs.

People being far too harsh on him off the back of our 1st pre-season game where they'll have been training hard all week and playing against opponents who will be much sharper than him due to them being further down their pre-season. Other players made mistakes as well and I don't see them getting jumped on.

He needs to go out on loan. Game time is needed to improve him.

A seasons loan worked utter wonders for Coleman that in no way shape or form came back the finished article. What is odd is we have had the perfect time to loan him out and now we are playing stick or twist with Heitinga who is officially the only actual experienced CB (albeit disregarding utility man Alcaraz) we have to step in for Jags or Distin.
What I now expect is to see Stones loaned out to play where we expect him to specialise - at centre back, on the condition we are keeping Duffy around to step into the first team as and when.

His game isn't about getting into a foot race with strikers facing his own goal, unlike Jagielka or Distin. He doesn't really have recovery pace and shouldn't have been left isolated in that situation yesterday. He's great in the air, at marshalling players around him and getting blocks in. A loan spell would probably do him the world of good, as he hasn't really played a lot of competitive football. Once he finds his feet he'll be ace.

He only made as many glaring errors as Jags yesterday despite playing for twice as long.

I was thinking this yesterday, but yet we have not had many people saying " That's Jags will never make it!!! "

First game in preseason, let him make the mistakes now before it counts. As long as he learns from them, not arsed at all. When the games have actually mattered, Duffy has yet to let us down.

Spot on mate.

Duffy played really well when it mattered and he had a run of Premier League games.

People making snap judgements on a kick-about in the Austrian sunshine need to get back to their games consoles rather than criticising our young players.

he might just need confidence. But he needs to go on loan. He needs 90 minutes week in week out. It's only fair...otherwise just sell him and let him get on with his career

I didn't even see the pre season game but every other time I've watched him play he's looked quite awkward and cumbersome. I think people who are expecting him to develop into a top class centre half are going to be left disappointed.

It's always the case with academy kids that we bemoan the fact they're not playing and tout them to be something they're probably not. A loan to a Championship side might do him the world of good, but if I'm being brutally honest there's every chance he'll find his level.

To be so short on pace at the top level really has to be compensated by every other part of his game being high quality, sad to say I don't see it, but I wish the lad the best of luck and hope he proves me wrong.
