Shane Duffy

Duffy is an old fashioned no nonsense centre-half. Absolutely fantastic in the air and has brilliant positioning. He may not be as quick as Distin or as good with the ball at his feet as Heitinga, but the lad is a brilliant defender. Definitely think he should be given his chance, however if Alderweirld really is coming in, a loan is the best option.

A couple of years back when he was on loan at Burnley I thought he was going to be massive for us, development hindered by a lack of competitive games. Can't blame him for being frustrated at all.

Met someone the other day who reckoned Duffy was quite a big drinker, seen him out regularly in town. Not saying this is at all true but would make sense him not getting much of a chance if he's turning up training hungover or whatever

Yeah I was thinking the same. That must have sent out a bad message to our young players: "no matter how badly the sniors are playing, you won't get a chance"

i do actually remember him posting on twitter last year something like "I'm beginning to forget how to defend lol" after watching some of our defending in those games. Can see he did not like being on the bench instead of ahead of Heitinga.

Loan would certainly be best option in my opinion, Provided we land Alderweirld. No one can say they would rather see Duffy in defence rather than him, he would just go further down the pecking order.

He needs to take inspiration from players like Ossie or Coleman who come back from loan and really made a name for themselves in the starting eleven. Coleman is now unstoppable and no doubt a part of that development was his loan with Blackpool.

I really do wish Shane Duffy well, but I am not sure that he will ever be a defender in a top six team. I think he is too slow ,too ungainly.
As has been pointed out before he is the classic old style centre half. Strong and simple ,good in the air and if it is on the ground kick it anywhere.
I think he will always struggle with the pace and movement of the better attacking premiership players.
I think he could do very well at a championship club or a lower level premiership club.

How comfy is he with the ball at his feet? I ain't seen enough to judge, and I know Moyes told him to play it safe when he played those few games.

Reason being, the defender who just defends is becoming less and less regarded. Managers are wanting ball playing defenders who can carry it out the back. Which is why David Luiz has been touted at £30mill+ player. Piss poor defender but great technician.

Could be a reason he isn't getting pushed forward.

Putting aside what has happened under Moyes, I think there are probably a few factors against Duffy.

1) It's going to be tough for him to break into the side ahead of experienced pros such as Jagielka, Distin, Heitinga and Alcaraz.
2) He's very good in the air but he'd struggle in a foot race. The quick Vienna forward 'marked' him to get away from Jags and caused him quite a few problems.
3) If we're going to play three at the back we could be unbalanced unless Shane is used in the middle and Martinez might prefer to use a player there who could step out of defence (Heitinga) or sweep around the other two centrebacks (Jags).
4) Stones suits the RCB position quite well and it could be difficult for us to have two inexperienced centrebacks in the back three.
5) Duffy has hardly played any senior football and it would be a risk to give him games for him to get up to speed.

I imagine that he will go out on loan this season once we know whether Heitinga is staying and once Alcaraz recovers from his hernia. When he does come back he could find himself as Distin's long-term successor, given that most of our current roster are late twenties or early thirties.

If he was good enough he would of played more.
If he was good enough plenty of PL teams would be interested.
If he was good enough he'd be getting called up internationally.

I hate to seem like im beating down on the lad, but he's a typical example of fans over hyping a youngster....just because he's a youngster coming through, thinking he's a top defender who can play for a top 6 PL team is madness. He should move on for his own sake. He's young could still improve and who knows where he could be in 5 yrs.... But with the attributes missing from his skill set I unfortunately don't see it being top level.

He's an absolute tit.

As you would act in any professional job, you don't slate your employers on a social network site.

Rightly so he isn't getting his chance, little tit.

Hes been called up a few times for internationals! As for the other points you could say the same for Ross Barkley.

I think people forget that Duffy suffered a horrendous injury a few years ago where he is lucky to still have a career. It put him back years.
