Is that you Klaas?

He's a man mountain, good positional sense, calm an composed, won't really be out muscled....

But Christ he's slow. Someone like torres or Defoe would murder him.

It's a bit of a conundrum for moyes. Jags is our best defender but our quickest it yobo. But heitinga and senderos are technically better defenders than yobo. As for distin, he just adds balance being a left footer and has more pace than senderos and johnny...

Senderos and Johnny are too slow to work together. It's one or the other. And Heitinga's better.

I think height is a factor too. I'd like a big imposing centre half playing to be fair. Johnny and jags ain't tall

I can remember a game last season where Jags literally won every header in the box. Heit isn't as important as you'd think (geddit?)

Then why are most centre halves 6ft if it wasn't important? Stick jags and heit up with carew, crouch or drogba and see how many headers they win.

It's about balance overall... And imposing yourself.

Only think senderos is missing pace to be a class defender

If Fellaini plays in the role he does, we dont need a tall centre back. Fellaini drops back there to help out the defence a lot.

Asking alot from him if we playing chelski, Stoke or the RS who have about 9 players at 6ft+. It's also surprising to think that it's rarely you see fellaini sticking his head onto the ball in our box defensively from corners etc

Funny to hear Moyesy over the weekend saying he wanted to play Jonny in midfeild but had to drop him back with injury. Hes a steady defender - tenacious and strong - but by far his best quality is his clamness, distribution and vision.

I wonder could this be utilised in a 4-2-3-1 with him and Fellaini in the anchor roles.

stubbs and weir were boss, give them time

Don't know if your joking but they kept Yobo out of the mix for ages. Neither one of them had any pace but knew all the positioning and thwarted many teams with Carsley helping out. We were tough to break down. We just didn't have the options up front to score. Many times it was 1-0 and it worked for 4th place. Marcus Bent & Fergie.

Heitinga and Jagielka have good enough leaps and attack the ball well enough, I can't see it being much of a problem to be honest. That's the most important thing really, bravery and the willingness to head it.

John Carew always used to bully Joleon Lescott, Lescott's one of the biggest (in terms of height and physique) centre backs around. These players will always give your team a tough time, most defenders won't cope with them aerially.

Having Fellaini and to a lesser extent Rodwell there certainly helps, players who can drop in and have enough height to help out in that area.

Surely we're trying to emulate Arsenal tho Neiler? Jags and Heitinga are probably about the same average height as Gallas and Vermaelen.

Hope not mate, they were shocking at the back today, Vermaelen seems like a big lad to be fair.

Whatever we can learn of Arsenal its certainly not defensive prowess!

i'm serious, neither were fast but they did a fantastic job as both were positionally superb and, stubbs especially, knew where the ball was going as he read the game unbelievably well
