Yes Germany got beat 8-3 in the earlier part of the competition and took an early two goal lead in the final but quite a few Hungarian players had started the game well short of being 100% fit and that told the further the game lasted and Germany finally over hauled them. There was little doubt though that Hungary were much the better team at the time,it was a lot like Red Rum beating Crisp in that famous Grand National, tiredness beat Hungary and Crisp not their opponents!!

Not been that bothered about this WC and even less so now given the demise of England. Would like to see Croatia progress to the final and win the WC. Modric is a special player and deserves more recognition than he gets

Thanks for the detail on an emotive subject mate. Well in. I’ve read some stuff on it and am always surprised by how ghastly the Serbs were in all of it.

Nobody was/is angel in this parts (despite everyone pretending they are), but short answer, its complicated.

Imperial divide and conquer has lot of blame for it, 300 years this parts were battleground between two super powers of that era, Habsburg and Ottoman Empires (also Christian and Muslim Europe) and we all were in middle of it.

Thats why Croatia got such a weird shape, our border was frontier between two rival empires for centuries (and a lot of blood spilled there and a lot of hate sown).
