2024/25 Seamus Coleman

Honestly it's abysmal to keep Seamus as a player on a Premier League salary. And guess what? Looks like he's still got no intention at all of retiring from international duty. This is why he's not an Everton legend, or even a modern-day one; anybody with integrity would not stick around for 3+ extra years pocketing probably an extra £15m when he's unable to play even a handful of games each season. He was a great player for us, but with every passing season his legacy gets massively tainted for me. He's now the sports highest-paid spokesperson, essentially.
 
We need to see the structure of the deal when it happens.
Seamus has a huge influence within the squad, that is clear.

If he stopped playing and became a full time coach then that changes his position in the dressing room.

Even though he has played so little football all season the manager still wants him at the club and as a player because he believes he can influence what is going to be a very different squad in a positive way.

I don't think Seamus will play a lot next season either but will have a lot of influence in other ways.

Kilbane is an Irish citizen since birth and both his parents are Irish. It would be news to them to claim "Ireland had no input" into producing him. Sheedy was born in Wales but has also been an Irish citizen since birth as his father is from County Clare. Carsley has a more distant relationship with Ireland - his grandmother was from County Cork.

Emigration since the famine has coloured our concept of Irishness. I'm no nationalist - these players may all very well claim Englishness as a central part of their identity too. But Ireland very much had a role in the stories of these people and their people.

I wouldn't be "thanking" Ireland, either. It's an accident of birth where one is born - or where one's ancestors were born. But these players can claim as much or as less Irishness as they like as far as I - an Irishman - am concerned. Their Irishness was coloured by the journey of their parents and grandparents. Mine stayed in Ireland. That's the only difference. I live in Germany now and my son is half-German. He's every bit as "Irish" as I am. Heck, he identifies with Ireland more than I do.

All that said, Seamus has been a great servant to club and country - but time for him to move on from both. I admire his determination to play on - but the club and his national team need to ensure their standards are high enough such that players nearing retirement realise that they are no longer good enough to get a game. Seamus, clearly, doesn't feel that yet. That's not a criticism of him - but of Everton and Ireland.

I`m not questioning whether they are Irish or not, but in terms of them learning the game and developing into players that could play at the top level, the English game produced them as footballers. When the money started coming into football in the 90`s the suits in the FAI looked after themselves rather than using the money coming into the game to develop footballers in Ireland.

Never understand this huge influence stuff. I hear it from previous soundbites from players and managers, but what exactly is he influencing now? As much as I love him. He is not improving standards, not playing games, not wearing the armband etc. Is he simply a cheerleader now because he certainly isn't a functioning or important player these days (and hasn't been for a number of years)?

Total guff yeah, I'd say most players ignore him and his publicity stunts.
 
Seamus is the faithful old retainer that Moyes can't bear to let go. Will he be any good as a coach when he has won nothing in his long career ? Young has actually won cups and leagues so would maybe a better coach . Of the two I think Young is more useful but tbh they should both be dispensed with .

Of all the players who cost Everton a fortune over the years, Coleman is hardly one.
3+ years ago Lampard was raving about the importance of Coleman in keeping Everton in the PL
He had a huge influence on Dyches survival squad.
He's saved Everton millions.
I've no problem with him and Young signing for another year. It's going to be a huge Summer of change and having senior experienced players around the place will prove invaluable. I'd imagine both will go in to coaching.
Take them out and Pickford, tark and Gana become the senior players and while I love all three, I think Coleman and Young have more leadership qualities.

Worry about whos going to play up front, or will we get a new starting RB or what will the naming rights be, or will the transition go well, or any number of itger things before worrying about Coleman and Young being bit part squad players as they transition to coaching.

He has been available more often than not. The managers have elected not to play him.

Tho I hate the suits in the FAI, there's not much they could have done to develop players when the lure of English football was on the doorstep from the age of 12 up.
Look at the difference Brexit has made to the League of Ireland. Thanks for the great league gammons ;)
 
Him and Young are seemingly two of the players who have stopped standards around the club truly falling through the floor.

They're clearly not there physically as players but without them I think we'd see a lot more players throwing in the towel whenever there's a bit of adversity.

It's not a coincidence there's plenty of stories of the pair digging others out and giving team talks among the players in tough moments.

I do worry that they'll see O'Brien as the #1 RB now though and palm off signing a full-fledged RB who can get up and down the pitch.
