To be honest I don't see many put him on a pedestal, he gets a lot of respect rather than adulation. Players/coaches/opponents etc.

He was a very good player until he broke his leg. He also seems like a good person.

He was indeed a good player. As I said, to me he represents an era - a bad one. To some extent, that's actually a credit to him in that his longevity made him synonymous with that time. I just want to see us move on now. Seamus hanging around doesn't preclude that. But we do need new players and new, higher standards, where winning, not passion or being a good lad, is the currency of icons.

For me, Coleman, perhaps unfairly, represents an entire era of mediocrity at Everton. I see very little to nothing of the last 15 years to celebrate - and Seamus was central to that time.

If you see sixty grand Seamus Coleman as representative of the state the club was in during his time here then you really are having some very strange thoughts.

I don't rate him as a "great player." I rate him as a wholehearted, honest player, with an attitude that was far superior to his technical ability. I am not bothered if he is a lovely lad or not - from what I hear, people speak very highly of him. But, for me, that's largely superfluous if he can't do it on the pitch.

We could probably count on one hand the players we've signed since he came through had his level of giveashyzer. He cares. It counts. Personally I don't just want a load of renegades who are lazy, don't care about the club and fans, and *still* don't do it on the pitch, which is by and large what we've had for a lot of the last decade or so.

You don't moan with your 4/10 face, pot belly and light wallet that you're not coming home to Sydney Sweeney. We're not shopping with the big boys.

Personally, I think it's a strike against him that he's taken the contract instead of saying goodbye and calling in his retirement, but I suspect he's on a much lower coaches wage. Let's not rewrite his career or place the failures of BK and multiple administrations on the fella though.

Why not just keep him on as a coach if he's that handy?

The playing side is the superfluous bit.

The important factor is Moyes clearly wants him being part of the playing staff where he has so much influence. It’s all that matters, he’ll be a key figure in transitioning so many new players and taking us to the new stadium.

I think the idea of keeping him for another year is his presence in the dressing room that helps motivate the team, which I thought was part of what the manager is supposed to do before a game. Nice to be such a nice guy to have around that Seamus can get a new deal even though he has shown he can`t stay on the pitch for much more than 20 minutes before his hamstring lets go.

He should be embarrassed signing a new playing contract knowing that he's incapable of playing at this level anymore. He shouldn't have signed the last one.

I doubt he'll be fit enough to lead them out.

Personally I wouldn’t have give him a new playing contract as he’s never fit. However not going to lose any sleep on it. If Moyes thinks he worth one so be it. We’d still be paying him as a coach in any event

All the stories that come out are that he’s the leader of the group trying to set high standards. He’s the epitome of a blue.

Thinking about it further, it’s probably vitally important to have that character in the dressing room this year given how many new players we’ll be bedding in

I'm not surprised he was offered an extension, but I think with the move to the new stadium and new era amongst other things it would have been the right time for him to seek a new path, either from within the club or outside. Both he, and the club, will have to do so eventually.

I would be very eager if I were him to get coaching badges and get stuck into a role somewhere, with the aim of returning.

That said, I don't think this is a hill worth dying on. Nor would I underestimate his leadership and contribution during some of the darkest times in our modern history. The ship did not sink.

I was struck by Lampards praise of him in particular. A very average manager, but a superb player who knew the highest of standards.

We have bigger things to concern ourselves with this summer and it's time to get on with it.
