A great result for Celtic after a poor day of results elsewhere (besides Rangers not winning also).
Calling it now, Stevie Me is another Keane, Souness etc. Great player, terrible manager.
World class player like they were, but unlike them I also don’t regard him as great captain. While Souness and Keane were mentally tough as nails, Gerrard is not. His reaction when the RS beat (whoever it was) and he gathered them round in a very public circle on the field, shouting “this doesn’t slip”, that’s nothing but mental fragility, and you can’t have that as a captain (or a manager). A panicky, public display of emotion. Keeganesque. A Roy Keane, a Souness, after such a win they walk down the tunnel, job done, no fuss, on to the next one, with everything kept on an even keel. In a high pressure situation you need your leader to spread calmness and composure, not spread panic and anxiety...”this doesn’t feckin slip”, which just ramps it up.
This same weak, public display of emotion happened after the win at Celtic before the new year. Screaming into the camera at full time. What’s happened since? Rangers have crumbled. There’s celebrating, which many coaches do, and then there’s a manic, screaming, anxiety-laden reaction.
The worst example of mental fragility in our team is Jordan Pickford. His hyper, over-reaction to just about everything, he’s a panic magnet. Just as you need calmness and assurance from your captain, and your coach, you need it from your goalkeeper. Ultimately it’s why Pickford will be binned.
Neil Lennon is not a top manager by any means, but he’s on different level to Gerrard. With his demeanour he brings an air of authority with him, a man who doesn’t go overboard with negativity towards his players (as Gerrard is doing, and what Souness and Keane did as managers). To be a top coach you need to excell in psychology, to understand what to say and do in front of your players to make them play to their maximum. Knowing which player needs a kick up the backside, or an arm around the shoulder. Just about every Rangers player is playing below themselves, and that comes from the manager.
