Michael Stewart banned from Hampden as former Hearts and Hibs star in SFA punishment amid referee complaints

Former Hearts and Hibs midfielder Michael Stewart has been banned from Hampden by the Scottish FA, amid strong criticisms of refereeing in Scotland.

The outspoken pundit has not held back in his verdicts over certain controversies this term. Stewart was forced into an SFA apology in November after a claim that they tried to ‘cover up’ a VAR decision that occurred during Hibs’ win at St Mirren. In October, unhappiness emerged from his criticism of a VAR decision in Falkirk‘s home win over Dundee.

Apologies from Stewart last year were accepted, but he has not let up since, with SFA chiefs claimed to be fed up. The ex-Hearts and Hibs man, BBC and Premier Sports have all been notified of the decision, after Stewart was ordered to keep his distance from the Scotland national team’s latest clash at Hampden against Japan last month.

Michael Stewart on being banned by the SFA

He will not work from Hampden at this weekend’s Scottish Cup semi-final clashes, with Falkirk against Dunfermline Athletic taking place on Saturday, and Celtic meet St Mirren the next day. Quoted in the Scottish Sun, Stewart said: “Instead of trying to silence voices of dissent, the Scottish FA should be engaging with us, answering our questions and explaining their position.

“People have every right to disagree with me – and many of them do every day. But all football commentators should be free to express an opinion, without being denied access to the places we go to do our jobs.”

It’s stated in the copy: “SFA chief executive Ian Maxwell is thought to have informed him he won’t be welcomed back any time soon. It’s understood the association are fed up with what they believe has been a sustained and concerted effort from Stewart to question their integrity.

Why have SFA banned Michael Stewart from Hampden?

“They are also unhappy at his treatment of head of refereeing Willie Collum and match officials during his work for Premier Sports. Refs and assistants are believed to have made their complaints known to the SFA and Premier Sports via the Scottish Senior Football Referees’ Association.”

Last weekend, Stewart criticised decision making in Hibs’ defeat to Aberdeen. Referee David Dickenson missed Grant Hanley’s foul on Aberdeen forward Toyosi Olusanya in real time and VAR was relied upon to dish out a red card and penalty. Emmanuel Gyamfi was also accused of a forearm blow on Hibs attacker Owen Elding, but after consulting the monitor, Dickenson insisted it was only a yellow. Stewart did, however, backed the officiating team’s decision to award Hearts a penalty kick after Jambos forward Pierre Landry Kabore was kicked by defender Stephen Welsh in the head during their 3-1 win over Motherwell.

This is poor from the SFA.

Imagine anyone daring to criticise our match officials! 😏

I'm sure slot has slated refs this week...

This is self defeating, they've made him a martyr and built him a tower to broadcast further. I have no idea who he is. If he has some pals in the game I'd have them taking the pish sarcy like. "and the referee has missed the foul there, what a great show..." "we're due a var decision of sorts soon, I wonder how long this fiasco I mean fantastic decision will take..." etc.

"looking forward to the half time buffet at hampden? wouldn't miss it for the world..."

I hope Premier Sports manage to rent a flat overlooking Hampden for todays game, and have Stewart reporting from it. 🙂

Like politicians, criticism comes with the job for match officials.

If you can't handle a bit of criticicism, I would suggest you choose another profession.

It would appear our refs aren't consistent in their approach to criticism. One club has been regularly criticising our officials for a few years now, and there have been no talks of bans, or strikes, over that.

hot air balloon, or some really tall ladders.

"is it windy up there Mike?" "players look like ants Phil" "the players aren't out yet Mike" "oh"

Seeing how petty the SFA are, I wouldn't rule out them baning Stewart from the airspace above Hampden. 😏

It doesn't loook like Stewart is working for Premier Sports today.

If I were a Premier Sports executive, I would be less than pleased that, after paying for the rights to broadcast the competition, some blazers have thrown what can only be described as a queenie fit, and banned one of their pundits from the entire Hampden Park area.

I wonder if they would have the Henry Hall's to ban a Sky reporter?

….he’s been terrific for them. I was fortunate to go to an Old Firm derby at Ibrox and was in the players lounge afterwards and it’s clear the respect they have for him;

Captain James Tavernier will leave Rangers at the end of the season, after 11 years at Ibrox.

The 34-year-old said on Instagram departing at the end of his current deal "hasn't been an easy decision".

"This club has been a huge part of my life and my family's over the past 11 years," he said.

"It's given me so much, both on and off the pitch and from the moment I arrived, I've always tried to give everything I had to represent it in the right way.

"To have had the honour of being made captain of this club since 2018 is something I will always be incredibly proud of. Leading this team out, wearing the armband and being trusted in that role has meant more to me that I can properly put into words."

Time for them to bring one of their own home.
