Cash or no cash...players like Eto'o wouldn't have entertained the idea of playing for Sgt Major Moyes and his square bashing routine. He had a reputation of screwing up forwards with donkey work and it would have been noted. He couldn't even get class to join him at United!

It seems I'm one of the few not totally enthused by him coming in

I thought he wasn't that good last season while at Chelsea or in the World Cup

Hopefully I'll be wrong about him and I can then get vaulted after he scores a bucket of goals for us and leads us to Europa League glory

Right now though, I can't help thinking we should have rolled the dice on Hope or Long and split the money between a cheaper striking option and another midfielder

He'll have my unquestioned support while he's an Everton player

For me it's more about our circumstances. We've spent a record sum on Lukaku, so he'll undoubtedly be our main striker and play most games. Eto'o I think will be someone who gives us an option off the bench plus the chance to rest Lukaku, whilst also giving Rom someone very experienced to learn from.

So he may make 10-15 starts this season, with maybe the same again off the bench. If he can get near 6-10 goals I reckon that's a decent return.

All the reports so far counter this though, and if he'd have really just wanted the money he'd have gone to Qatar.

He could, but these players also want exposure. The PL is the only game in town in that respect. I think we fit the bill for him: because of the extra tv revenue and the fact there's no fee we can finance something like this...and United, Arsenal, Liverpool and City are not in for him. It was going to be us or Spurs...it'd have been the daft Geordies two seasons ago before they started trimming.

Think I'd prefer Mirallas on the left, Lukaku on the right, Eto'o in the middle and Naismith behind. McGeady is very skilful but doesn't produce enough and he's slow to react defensively.

I fear this has car crash written all over it. It looks like a pay day to me and I dont really like his attitude. I'd have been way more comfortable with a Wellbeck deal.

That said...he could be our Cantona!!

Combination of wages + PL exposure. I'd like to think he sees us as a last great project in his illustrious career, but he doesn't look the type to me.

I'm completely split on this.

On one hand it's Samuel Eto'o a legend of the game, a renowned goalscorer and a massive step up in class as far as our previous strikers go. I'm also convinced he's not doing it for the coin but to keep playing at the highest level he can.That's all sounding great.

On the other hand he's (allegedly)33 and strikers aren't known for carrying on at a good level into their mid 30's.

He also is the man who led his International team mates on a strike over wages for the World Cup, which makes me question is he the right character to have around.

The fact is though we have gone from Vellios/Jelavic to Eto'o so as long as he buys into the whole team before self philosophy we have then he'll do well. I'm sure he can help Rom as his brain will still be the same. Good experienced top level player to learn from.

So it's not about the pay day, it's about the exposure then?

Not sure why a multi, multi millionaire Eto'o needs exposure at 33 myself.

Maybe he could just want to stay in the best league in the World - the EPL, and ram Mourinho's comments back down his throat.

A couple of years back we'd be shouting at Moyes to change it, with the Strach or Velios sat on the bench, waiting to replace Saha or Cahill. On Saturday it could be the World star Eto'o, that'll be brought on to replace our new £28m forward, I'll have to pinch myself tbh.

But he is a free transfer.. Its just the same as spending 6 million on a player and giving him 40k a week over two years.. Im sure theres no decent strikers out there for 6 mil either..

The transfer fee is only one side of the costs to a club, wages are important as well...Plus, if you have a wage structure in place then there will inevitably be jealousy from those who feel undervalued/underpaid which can have a destabilizing effect...Something no team can discount, IMO

He's a very good signing though and will provide a winning mentality even in training since he is a hard working professional on top of all his other qualities

One of my favourite players, just a pity it´s not a bit earlier in his career! He was a legend at Barça. I loved how he hated Madrid and took it personally they never gave him a chance, he got revenge plenty of times.

When was the last time we had a past, or current, unarguably best player in the world in their position? Southall I´d say. And Eto´o was for me easily the best striker in the world for a good three seasons at one point.

Absolute club legend, agree...In his prime, he was lethal...His competitive fire was a vital component even during Ronaldinho's time at the club

Of course, he's not entirely the same player any longer owing to age but he will still add a great deal to the team

He's the first natural leader we've had up top since Big Dunc and Kevin Campbell. And Kenwright, for his faults, is not the horribly bent president of a sub-Saharan African FA, so I doubt there's much to fear from an Eto'o-led coup attempt over pay down Goodison Road...!
