Can't blame him. Would you be happy as one of the greatest strikers of the past 10-15 years, to be playing on the wing or in midfield? And barely seeing any game time.

Keyword there past, he's 33 and clearly not good enough to be leading the line everyweek even if we didn't have Lukaku which is why RM has been trying to accommodate him in midfield with mixed results, let's not forget the Burnley game. If he's on anything like one imagines, then perhaps moving him on and using those wages on a new goalie/defender would be good business

He's been misused by Martinez, he's started in the wrong games and he'd have scored more if wasn't continuously being placed out of position. He's still a no.9, dunno why we keep playing him behind a striker when he hasn't got the legs to do that role. He's a fox in the box, he should be staying the penalty area the whole time and letting the lads behind him like Mirallas, Barkley and Naismith do all the leg work. Same applies with Lukaku too for the most part.

Could be that Eto'o himself likes playing deeper? He started off as (amost) a midfielder before he moved up as a striker. As said elsewhere, when he was in Russia he insisted on playing as a '10.'

If he wants to play week in-week out we should let him go. He's not that huge a loss.

If we played two up top it might be different but we don't and The Kone has looked pretty lively since coming back.

Maybe this one has got legs? Personally though we probably won't get a better squad player/2nd or 3rd striker than him.

I like Eto', I think he was a world class player and while not at that level anymore an ex world class players still has a lot to offer like he has shown in cameos this season.

I do however think that if he is going its down to the player and the plus side it could free up some probably sizeable wages to get someone else in on loan or a free.

Probably makes sense to get rid of Eto'o seeing as Martinez won't use him in his real position. He's not a floating number eight or whatever he is trying to be made into, and must be one of the highest earners. A great guy to have around the squad, but there again so is Osman apparently and he's not playing. Can't afford to have him eating up 60k a week and not playing. Plus if Kone is staying fit he'll be fine as a backup striker.

EDIT: Only get rid of the wages will be spent elsewhere, like!

Been great to have him at Everton and ranks way higher than Ginola/Gazza etc. However, he is still in good nick and if he can find a club prepared to play him more than he has at Everton, I wouldn't stand in his way. I wish him all the best.

Bit harsh on Martinez this. Eto'o played as a "10" when he was in Russia and in the games where he has been used as a central striker by us, we've suffered because he floats wherever he likes on the pitch and leaves us with no focal point at all. I like him, but I think it's been fairly clear from his appearances for us that he has become a number 10 as his career has wound down to compensate for his lack of pace, which is what a large part of his game was about when he was younger and a "number 9".

As it happens, I think he is the most creative number 10 we have on our books but we've struggled to accommodate him at times. I can see the logic behind getting rid of him (even though I like him as a player), but I'd be a bit apprehensive if we relied on Kone as Lukaku's cover. Think we need three senior strikers on the books.

When you've paid 28m for a club record striker the very best thing you can do is bring in one of the worlds best strikers over the last 10 years and have him train every day with your investment.

Eto'o is still a very useful player, playing out of position for the majority of the time, but I think it can't be overlooked the knowledge Lukaku, and others, can get from him while he is here, that alone means I would like him to stay and see out his 2 years.

He just sits off beyond the centre circle and tries repeated through balls that never come off like an annoying young lid playing Pro Evo for the first time against you.

Flog him.
