Time to leave, but making it quick, who would you choose as the greatest side never to have won the FIFA World Cup.

It's as simple as that.

Many people say Brazil '82, but i'm not so sure, I think Poland would of been more worthy winners that year, if not for Rossi.

There was even talk of Scotland in '78, but if you get whacked by Peru and held by Honduras I think it was, then having a belated win over the netherlands last up, is hardly world beaters.

Denmark in '86 had a great side and looked real winners before taking a hiding in the later stages.

Spain in 2002, is another candidate.

but above all else, for me the standout winner (or runner up) must be Hungary in '54.

what a geat side that was, easily the best in the world at that time, but somehow Magyars lost to West Germany in the final.

Ferenc Puskas, the galloping major, I think was top scorer in that tourney, but in the end the trophy went to Berlin. :dodgy:

Think Holland back in 1972 deserves a mention. Did we push that self destruct button or what?
1974. From what I've read and the reruns I've seen of that final, the Dutch team seemed to be so convinced they would win they fannied about a bit against what was a very good West Germany team

Have to concur with what's been said so far. People say that history only remembers the winners but the Dutch team in 74, the aforementioned marvelous Magyars in 54 and the Brazil team in 82 are examples that prove that there are at least exceptions to the rule.
Poland do deserve an honourable mention, but for me it would be the 1974 team.
for those of you old enough to remember, I'm sure, like me, you've imagined the mouthwatering prospect of a final in 1982 between Brazil and France.

Yes, of course I mean the 74 team, my mistake. Left a nasty scar on the memories of a lot of older people over here, including my dad. The amount of times I had to hear that story, should've been enough to have me traumatised.

read that about 2 hours ago and have been hyperventillating and wiping the tears away since.
ffs they were [Poor language removed] and actually thought they were gonna win the thing.

still lollin' big time here.

best to never win it......

2 words TOTAL FOOTBALL.

no names required.

I would never tout England for this 'honour', there have been times when you could say that was our best team and there was a chance to go all the way, but as long as the f.a. select a team of prima-donnas and play a negative brand of football then we can only dream.
In this day and age with a so called "golden generation".....no chance, selfish self centred media darlings who are concentrating on book deals and their wags, inbetween texting pics in their bill grundies to other players birds etc.... dream on.

If a team was built around industrious hard working players who would sacrifice everything for the ultimate prize then iI think we would have more of a chance. The types that dominated Europe for years with 'our' brand of football that nobody could live with. '86 was the last team we had like that, jack charlton threw a team into the international arena that played like a club team and I wish we would.

I generally refer to them as the 'Gold Card generation'

just a few things here.

First reply, states Australia, what as "the best side never to win the World Cup" ?

hardly.

I remember the day in question, Italy get a dubious penatly in the last minute, it wasn't a foul, Toni or Totti score right at the end, and lo and behold the Azzuri go on to be world champions.

but do you think that side was good enough to be world champions. There's the difference.

Next, Dutch Toffee says Holland '72.

World cups were held in '74 and '78, incidentally with the Netherlands being runners up both times, beating Argentina 4-0 on route to the final first off and being beaten by the same side in the final four years later.

and, i should of included them, they had a great side in 1974, Rep, Cryuff, Resenbrink, etc, perhaps they should be the outright winners, but I'm sticking with Hungary.

maybe it should be FRance in 1982, I remember watching the semi-final in Seville and the German keeper (Schumacher) runs like a bull on speed off his goal line and takes out a French midfielder (Battiston), laying him out unconscious in a heap with a savage animalistic attack, knocking out three teeth in the process, and lo and behold, he doesn't get a booking, or a caution, the referee just turns a blind eye, and the Germans win on a penalty shoot out, with Schumacher the hero saving French spot kicks of all things.

France again in '86, not for me, there were better teams that fell short, they get recognized more for beating the holders on route to the semi-final.

Even Denmark beat the Germans that year with something to spare if memory serves, before they were handed their asses on a plate by Spain in that strange beating.

Scotland were candidates to be champions in '78, not my words, probably some bum on a park bench in Drumchapel after a few malt whiskies maybe, but they did have a fine side, should Moyes have been included perhaps?

Or spain 1982 even, he was a player at Parkhead back then.

Not a big fan of England, but in 1970 their squad was actually better than when they won it, it was down to Banks going down to food poisoning and his deputy Bonnetti falling short against West Germany in the last eight.

England were 2-0 in Leon, Ramsey takes off Bobby Charlton, saving him for a semi final that never happened, and they end up losing 3-2.

I don't think Brazil would of been beaten in the end.

and they got to keep the trophy that year too.

What do they put in the water in Baltimore?

the 2010 tourney hasn't even started yet, no games have been played.

I feel more absurd answers could be on the horizon, so I'm making a dash for bedsheets.

It was a joke. I wrote it tongue in cheek, hence the :P

BTW, I live closer to DC than Baltimore.
