Mac, I have a Honda HRV,,, not as big as the CRV but it is now over 10 years old and I will never let it go as it has been amazing and has never let me down, passed every MOT from new with no problems whatsoever....fuel wise it's not bad either but it is only a 1.6 auto so not a proper off roader. My next car will deffo be Honda again....( I also have a peugot which is gash )

Just make sure she can drive the thing. I live in the country and from my experience women lose all spatial awareness when they get behind the wheel of one of them horrors.

"no, you don't have to force me into the hedge, love, there's another two feet of road to your left FFS".

And if you don't live in the country there's absolutely no reason to buy one. Land Rover or nothing. None of those are capable off-road vehicles.

This. You've no idea how many times I've nearly been run over by people in shiny bright SUVs that have never been near any mud. I've heard people that own them say it makes them feel safer on the roads. Might bloody well make you feel safe but I don't fancy being knocked off my bike by you whilst you're feeling safe thanks.

Unless you're a farmer or do some off road driving I really have to ask the question why you need one?

Because no one can dictate to you how to spend your money. People will buy what they want, and unfortunately, your safety is secondary to 'my' safety.

Well yeah, touche. I just can't help feeling it becomes a race to the bottom then, with so many SUVs on the road, people have to buy bigger and bigger tanks to drive around in just to feel safe from the other tanks chugging about.

Something to ask though. Do your kids cycle at all? If they do, how'd you feel about them sharing the road with so many unnecessarily large vehicles? I dare say the chance of survival must be lower if one hits a pedestrian too.

I am not going to let my kids cycle on the roads, and I am not going to get into a debate about cyclist 'sharing' the road. You won't like my stance on it at all. No need to get into something the neither of us will convince the other about.

But vehicle choice is completely a personal thing. Unless you want the government to step in and start regulating what we can and can't buy.

The Range Rovers are massive though, non?

And pee-eew are they expensive. I'd be gunning for a X5 or a Cayenne if I had that much to spend.

Hear what your saying about the Off Roadness, and believe me in my job I could be out the back of Mudgee looking for swamps, or driving a Director through the City. It has to serve both purposes, true, it will be the womans car, but i will have to use it for work when needed.

Those Kia's have an 8 year warranty I heard, and the Great Walls look great with some knarly roof racks and those chrome step rails on the bottom.

looking at 30K AU...what would you spending for an SUV in your neck of the woods?

And Cheers Bry. x McB

HAHAHAHA!!!! The whole Jeep range are all massive POS's!!!

Yours is converted to LPG so there is good reason to run it, but the Jeep 4.0 is a terrible engine tat just sucks the gas down.

Macca, the Kia (or the Hyundai version) are great choices. Reliable, good economy, well equipped and both come with superb warranties. Also you can't go wrong with a Honda or a Toyota.

jeep.... Just Expect Every Problem. It was a Jeep specialist that told me that as well.

Points to Road Fund License in corner of windscreen, or tax disc as it more commonly known. Those that pay more should get to keep more of the road and be higher up the pecking order, why should they give any of it up for a freeloader. That's the ethos thats usually pushed isn't it ? Obviously kids on bikes are above anything else but adults on bikes should stop playing out and get a 'ped at least.

Something with a native timber would be a fine choice, I myself considered Rimu go faster stripes and a macrocarpa starsky and hutch for my Tredia.

Hasn't been road tax for donkeys years (1937 I believe). It's an emissions tax. That's why electric cars don't pay it. Roads are paid for out of general taxation.

Aye, that's fair enough, I'm not advocating the government dictate what kind of vehicle you can buy. Just be nice if drivers took things a bit easier 'tis all. When you're in something that can kill other people very easily a bit of patience really does go a long way.

The paper work that accompanies a renewal notice calls it A Vehicle License and the disk a Tax Disc, it;s not about emissions as it was until fairly recently the same amount for all cars, the emissions blag is just a way to get more out of some people on the basis of being green, or not as the case may be. It also means that those that can afford a new car get it for £20 or £30, whereas the arl granny that has a 12 y.o. car with 15,000 miles on the clock will be paying over £200.

What is the price range macca, those VW's are expensive. My brother in law has a great wall and it seems pretty good for the price, they are a new car though so no history on the longevity of the engine.

Many people think that AWD means that the laws of physics don't apply to them. We had this problem in the states in the mid-90s when everybody was buying them up and never driven a truck before. SUVs aren't safer than a car.

20 - 30k. My old Boss has a great wall and it does look pretty swish.
