Everton are close to wrapping up a deal for Shelbourne defender Ryan Robinson, according to Shels boss John McDonnell.

Robinson had previously been on trial with the Goodison Park club, where impressed Toffees boss Roberto Martinez and negotiations are ongoing regarding the future of the former St Kevin's Boys youth player.

The 18-year-old, who has featured for the SSE Airtricity First Division side on three occasions this season, was recently included in Paul Doolin's Republic of Ireland Under-19 squad for the upcoming Uefa U-19 Championships Elite qualifying round.

According to McDonnell, the English Premier League side are keen on the defender and indicated that Shelbourne would not stand in the way of a move across the Irish Sea.

"Everton are chipping away with us on Ryan at the moment and we hope to get the deal over the line soon," McDonnell told the Irish Examiner.

"The initial fee won't make us millionaires but we’ll make sure it’s heavy on the end of it. It might be better for us to go for the add-ons and everything else."

He added: "Ryan certainly has a big future in the game. Everton would have seen a rawness to him but he has a lot going for him.

"We'd have no problem allowing him to move on to a better level in England."

cue overhype as coleman came from same league

everyone from the championship is boss as gareth bale came from der x

That you Moyes? Negative sod.

no mate just cant be arsed with the inevitable overhype of a lad based solely on the fact that he comes from the same league coleman did.

9/10 chance he wont be anywhere near as good as coleman and a good chance he might not even make it at a club like ours like is the case with many youngsters, im happy if he joins but not gonna get excited for nothing

We're not the type of club just to get players in for the sake of it to make the numbers up especially with Martinez, Jags/Distin/Alcaraz all getting old, We have Duffy but he doesn't look up to it I think he's a bit of a yard dog, we have Tyias Browning and I think eventually he'll step up, maybe this season, but instead of writing off a player, just support him and stop being so negative, yeah he might not make it, but he's joining us. There is absolutely no point in writing him off unless you can tell he's utter garbage.

Do you honestly think that because we found a diamond in the rough with Coleman, that we must now think the league is a diamond mine? Players from decent leagues are more likely to be over-hyped I imagine....

Can't wait for Chico to vault this.

It's like Rory Donnelly at Swansea. Obviously they don't all make the grade but there's nothing wrong with pointing out our obviously strong Irish scouting network with the acquisition of Coleman and being quietly happy the good work seems to be continuing.
