Running

I saw someone writing about flux training, but to be honest it went right over my head.

I quite like the threshold training, fortunately my Garmin Fenix seems to have a few programmes I can follow

What do you know about Garmin training? I have never tried it myself but interested in building something for my son to follow. Does it allow custom workouts?

Flux training, as I understand it, is like a reverse interval. Instead of hammering the “on” interval (track repeats, etc) you run the “on” at threshold and the off fluctuates until it rises to a faster speed. Build your aerobic capacity through the “negative space” (my words.) Fascinating idea with some merit.

I signed up for Edinburgh marathon 2024 to set myself a long term target, I’m the heaviest and most unfit I’ve ever been. Started running 10weeks ago and just got up to and finished a 10K, but the days after my shins have been killing me. Looks like it’s shin splints.

Anyone experienced this? Read a lot online just seems need to rest and stretch etc but looks like could be weeks out which is really frustrating as was loving the progress and getting out there.

New shoes recommended which I have got but only wore them for my last run before the pain so was probably too late by then
Shin splints are pretty much rest, toe taps. They can take a good 6 weeks to truly feel better. I always wear calf compression sleeves, IDK if I need them anymore but I've used them for years and it just doesn't feel right running w/o them.

I've been relatively injury free since my physical therapist told me, "hey that labral tear, we'll do exercises for 6-8 weeks, you'll feel better. however your posture sucks, you have no core, and weak in bunch of other muscle groups so you'll be back in 4-6 months w/ reaggravation or some other injury. So we can keep doing this or you could sign up for pilates. If anything you'll do more there and its cheaper."

So I took her advise and go about 1X week just beginner/intermediate. Takes a while 6-10mo but I did build up a core and that's improved my running form. Haven't been injury free but they've all been minor overworking stuff that takes 10-14 days.

Signed up for Edinburgh Mara next year. Haven’t been able to mentally get my head into a Mara since March 2020 when I had just finished my training plan for Manchester and covid cancelled them all.

The training is so full on, it takes me years between each marathon.

Got GNR in September which will hopefully springboard me into upping by my miles.

Book your accommodation early, Embru hotels get expensive and fill up fast for marathon weekend.

I’ve already been looking and even the basic no frills hotels are like £150/200. I’m tempted to find someone outside Edinburgh and just drive in on the morning

I booked Premier Inn at South Queensferry last year , I didn’t use it in the end for the marathon as I got Covid 🤷‍♂️. For Bruce Springstein concert I ended up in Premier Inn Dunfermline! That may be the wrong side of the Forth Bridge for you though. If driving in , the Trams from the airport are good , but be cautious as things like Ingliston Park and ride may fill up early. There’s a good Facebook page where you can get advice once you’ve booked eg don’t pay for marathon organisers bus back into centre, normal buses are quicker and cheaper.

Think my partner is coming to support. So I’m assuming she can drive to relatively near the finish and we just leave from there. But it’s been a long time since I have been up there (we did the relay in like 2012 or something).

I’ll get it sorted in the next few days hopefully. As I think having accommodation booked makes it harder to drop out.

No running for a week and a half due to holiday and food poisoning (or something), so annoying as I was in a great place before. Oh well, I'll see what I'm like in a few days
I land home on Thursday morning. Going from high 30’s to low 10’s temperature wise. Can’t wait to get out for a 5k to see how my shoulder is fairing after doing my best to break it at the end of June.
