Running apps

It's gone a bit 'Kurt' in here.

Yeah, if it helps you, it helps. I have periods of running and not running. Whenever I pick it up I start off on a low bar, very gentle pace. Next run up the distance by 10%. When comfortable doing 2 miles I'll start throwing in sprints or fartleks every now and then. On the longer runs, continue upping by 10% until you hit goals.

I guess what I'm saying is, do we need digital stuff to make and keep plans or approaches? Not really. I'd defo say away from paying £20 a month. £240 a year.

You pay for your running shoes yearly by not subscribing to that. The essential stuff, if you're into it.
Yeah, i have a pair of Hoka running shoes but they seem huge to me.

If i ever did a race i think id need some lighter ones that dont offer as much support but dont have the feeling of running on stilts

Which Hoka are you using ?

If you’re on the Bondi, they’re way too stacked for anyone other than the heavier runners, which is who they’re designed for.

I use the Runna app and find it great. I was a beginner who would struggle to a 5k. Been using the Runna app for training and have hit sub 30 min a number of times for 5k. A feat that seemed impossible to me prior to using the app.

The app builds your training programme for any distance you want. Beginner to marathon distances. Gives you warm up exercises as well. There is a subscription which is about £100 for a year. Can pay it a number of ways. I’d highly recommend this app.

clifton i think they were. Seem really high to me, thick sole

They’re Hokas most popular road shoe.

I use the Hoka Rincon for the roads and hard ground and three other types of Hoka for trails, each one does a different job.

I love the Rincons, as it’s like running on feathers and they’re so light you forget you’ve got them on.

The best thing to do, is pay for a gait analysis in a proper running shop and they’ll point you towards the shoes most suitable for your feet and gait 👍

have you tried the couch to 5k?

I was just thinking that if the goal is to be able to run 5k then surely that’s the one because it’s free and apparently it’s done in an easily achievable way?

is a gait analysis actually worth it for someone who will probably only do 2/3 runs a week for 45 mins each time maximum?

Iv not used that mate. As I said, Runna is great and will deffo get you to your goal. When you smash your 5k target, you will want to either improve your time or distance. So I’d recommend the app for that. It’s a long term running/training app.

Once you get into running you will end up setting yourself more and more targets.

This. No digital for me, still use a cheapo casio plastic watch (ok it's digital).
Steady increments is key, and when you're comfortable chuck in something different to keep it interesting, fartleks, going off rd, even regular visits to back row of BMD.
Good luck

I’d say yes, as if you’re running for 45 mins x 3 on the wrong shoes, that’s a lot punishment on your feet, ankles / knees and hips with the wrong shoes on.”

It’s all about finding the brand that suit your feet.

I run on Hoka and Inov8, as they suit my feet. I can’t run on Salomon or Adidas as they cripple my feet.

There’s a lot of trial and error, which can be expensive.

Years ago, Strava (the free version) was great which is why I got it. The free version is pretty bad these days, I wouldn't bother getting it if I was to just start. Runna has just been bought by Strava so I guess they will be getting similar soon. I get the odd month where I get an upgrade and I don't really get the point of all the stats, seems a bit overload for me but people loves stats these days

If you have the Garmain one with the watch, that one is pretty good for stats. I've never used to training help on any of them. I probably would for a bit for a marathon but the half marathon training things seemed a bit OTT for me, so I didn't bother and I run them fine with no injuries

Yeah, I might see how i take to it with the couch to 5k. If i like it, then i suppose then i’ll at least have a sense of how quick i run 5k as a benchmark
