Attacked in a bar, vilified by a reviled columnist and embraced by his boyhood club – Ross Barkley will not forget the past week in a hurry. The Everton midfielder responded to a traumatic period with an influential show against Burnley as Ronald Koeman’s team climbed to fifth with an eighth consecutive home win. Goodison Park, if he did not realise it before, is Barkley’s sanctuary.

There was a standing ovation for the England international when he left the pitch in the final minute and pointedly, amid doubts over his future at the club, Barkley responded in kind. The 23-year-old absorbed the celebrations on the Gwladys Street after striking a decisive second goal against Sean Dyche’s unfortunate side – credited to Ben Mee after a deflection off the Burnley defender – and pointed to all four sides of the ground, other hand on crest, while being booked for standing on the advertising hoardings as he did so. Phil Jagielka, with his third goal in three games, and Romelu Lukaku, with his 24th league goal of the season, sandwiched Barkley’s intervention.

Any doubts i had about him staying or going kinda dissipated over the last week, yesterday he didn't look like a lad whose willing to walk away from us did he? Far from it, think the past weeks events have brought him back to remembering he's one of our own. (and maybe reminded a few of us who seemed to have forgot that at times the very same)

Haven't read the article, but the quote of £35m gets me. Yes, he only has 1 year left so that in itself make the quote reasonable. But then why do we hear quotes of £25m for Keane (a Centre Back). The media say things like "Everton will have to pay" this or that if they want a certain player. But then they play down the projected price for our players.
Anyway hopefully its all speculation and Ross signs up!

...I think the £35m relates to a bid from Mourinho when he was at Chelsea.

My thoughts too.
The face he pulled when he said 5th and his voice raised. As if we had achieved something quite monumental.

Sickens me that the likes of City and Chelsea are considered superior to of a club of our historical stature.

Order will be restored in the coming seasons though. :)

They are superior. Just like in the 80s we would of all laughed at chelsea or the way we would of laughed at city when in league 1.

My lad did that last night.

Ross gave it a like as soon as he posted it so he's absolutely made up.

They don't have our history, we are the 4th most successful club in England, Chelsea weren't in the 80s

Hey rom you wanna sign for us. We have won shed loads in the last 10 years. Or you can stay at everton as they have won stuff but only 1 trophy since you were born.

Plus if you look at chelseas trophy count in the past 20 years id pretty much say they have built there own history so they do have history.
21 trophies since 1997. Including 4 league titles (soon to be 5), a europa league (we havent won), a champions league (we havent won), cup winners cup, euro super cup (we havent won), 6 fa cups (more than us), 4 league cups (we havent won ).

Id pretty much say they have a more succesful history than us. Just because it is recent history dosent make it any less succesful

In the modern game however history is unfortunately only a small aspect of a club's stature, especially for those who have no link to the club.

Pains me to say it, but for a footballer the likes of Chelsea and Citeh will be perceived in the higher echelons and objectively you'd say rightly so.

They are recent champions, challenge in Europe (which gets them in the spotlight) and have a multitude of players who are of a high calibre.

The same can be said with fans unless you've lived through those experiences. Ask a young fan about the likes of Forest, Derby or Leeds et al...

Bet they barely raise an eyebrow whereas even with their recent decline it brings back memories of stalwarts of the top of the game.

It's our job to sell our history to players who we're interested in as rightly or wrongly their glare will be towards the likes of Chelsea and Citeh.
