Same situation as with Lukaku really. If you get the Spurs squad quality around him, he'll look even better.
Get the 4 or 5 quality footballers needed in the Summer.

What do people expect England to do?

You cannot play with Barkley and Alli in the same team. Alli is much better number ten, and Barkely isn't good enough defensively to play in a midfield two or three. Maybe would be OK against the teams in qualifying but against the better teams he would be out of place. Barkley is at his best when his main responsibility is to attack. Unfortunately for him, Alli is around. Many very good or great players rarely played for England, it happens. The great Howard Kendall never even played for England. Andy Cole, Fowler, Le Tissier, etc rarely played.

Barkley probably has played for England more than the above players, and with respect, has not done as much as the above.

Maybe Barkley should play a right winger for England. Same position as he plays here. Instead of him a player like Rashford get playing time. Or Lallana.

Pickford - Walker, Stones, Cahill, Bertrand - Dier, Davies - Barkley, Alli, Sterling - Kane. Oxlade-Chamberlain, Walcott, Defoe subs. England wins.

Rashford is very talented, and only 19/20. Definitely a CF though rather than winger. And Lallana is excellent in midfield. His energy and ability on the ball is fantastic. He is a must in the England team for me.

Your team does show a good problem (for England, bad for Ross) though, lots of talented young/young-ish players. Lots of potential for a great team for World Cup 2022.

No coincidence that EFC scored from corners.. Barkley did not take them. Also, he still tends to slow things down
but a good game otherwise. Great centre for the Lukaku header.

But compare his passing stats to Ross. Ross makes nearly twice as many key passes a game, he has a better accuracy, he has more assists etc.

If Southgate had any sense (lol) he'd find a way to get the pair of them to combine for England. They're not clashing talents like Gerrard and Lampard. They could be very complementary.

Alli can play sort of a second striker and Ross a bit deeper and they'd be fine. Sort of like Ross and Kev do for us already but there is no way an England manager is going to figure out a way to not waste somebody's talents

Although I'm of the opinion we could replace Ross Barkley a lot easier than Lukaku, I'm also of the opinion that it would send out the wrong message if we sold one of our most talented player and boyhood Evertonian to the likes of Spurs.

But maybe it's best for his career.

I'm not a big fan of Barkley. I think my posts on this site probably show this. I think he is very talented, but for one or more reasons he hasn't been able to deliver it, definitely not to the level us supporters hope/think.

Some people have the body and skill, but not the mind. Some people have the mind, but not the body and skill.

It's why Lebron James will never be as good as Michael Jordan. He absolutely has the talent, but he does not have the same killer mentality of Jordan.

Dele Alli steps up when Kane isn't around. Would Barkley step up without Lukaku?

People don't like comparing Barkley to Coutinho because of the age difference. The difference is bigger between Alli and Barkley, than Barkley and Coutinho.

I would cash in while we can get a big price.

Still very much in two minds about Barkley. On one hand he is the boyhood blue, a born and bred scouser and viewed as the absolute top star of our academy with massive potential, who can look very good on his day. Other side of the story is that he has underperformed for the last 2-3 years and people start questioning the hype. Personally think he's on the up at the moment and I'd hate to see him being sold too soon and than witnessing him fulfilling his potential at someone like Spurs.

I said it, I'll readily admit. After seeing the improvement unfold in front of my eyes this season I've come to the conclusion that Ross' demise was obviously down to the failings of our previous tomato plant of a manager. Along with everything else that was crap at the club.

I agree. It's tricky. I think it's a case of believing he will lead us, or we should cash in. Does he have the talent to lead us? I think yes. Will he? I don't think so.

I think we have a very similar opinion, I'm just maybe more negative

Obviously it would be fantastic to have a local man leading us forward into a hopefully very successful era. Personally though, I think Davies is the most likely to do this.
