Ross Barkley

He's had more 7 or higher rated games than 5 or below this season from the stats I've seen. I think too many read the rags and don't look into the facts or use their eyes.

He has clearly improved, he is very far from crap. He is an excellent footballer and is only 23. There are others in the team that aren't performing to their potential but clearly Ross has become the media Scape goat and they twist every word Koeman says about him. Would Everton be weaker without him? Yes, most definitely.

I believe he will fulfill his potential and I hope it's at Everton. As I said before, let's judge the lad when more quality is added to the side. Until then, let's try supporting him rather than driving him down.

Would love to see him play a but deeper. Strut around and spray the ball all over the park and shut up the hounders. Can see what he offers as a number 10 tho. Unless he gets closer to rom and feeds off him. Is not happening at moment.

Found it interesting that Koeman says he see's him comfortable in the 10 role or 8 but at 8 he must learn the defensive aspects. Reason i find that so interesting is we have seen no sign yet of him even attempting to play Ross in a deeper more disciplined position yet this season which begs the question how will he ever learn if he never experiences the role.

Its been noticeable this season he has looked to work harder at times to track back particularly against Liverpool and yeah his tackling was crap yet snidely enjoyable to watch and he will have learnt a better understanding from those situations. You would think while Barry has been out and Gueye being much more of a grafter this would have been the time to take the risk as results haven't been going well as it is.

I've said for a long time that for me he is not and never will be a #10 type player we need. Perhaps if we had a target man type striker then potentially he could grow into it more but with Rom who can barely hold off a gust of wind with his back to goal, Ross isn't the type to feed killer passes through regularly that Rom will thrive on. He also has a tendency to slow the game down which would again be more suited to a deeper role and we have seen this season when you take him out the team there is no bridge between defence and attack, no one prepared to take the ball and even Ross needs to improve this area himself.

For me i don't see it happening this season but perhaps if he's still with us next season we may see him played from a deeper role if we bring in a proper creative midfielder to play off Rom. Similar to how Conte is at Chelsea, he has Kante and Matic who are his brick wall (Gana and Schneiderlin would be our equivalent if the latter signs) but he knows Fabregas lacks the defensive side of the game but then offers more going forward than either of them and that's how i see Ross being for us. In the difficult games were we expect to be pinned in you use your defensive wall and have the option of switching to a 3 midfield or dropping Ross then playing him in the games we are expected to control and allow him to grow in to the role by getting the experience with less pressure on him to have a defensive lapse.

My ol' man threw a question to ponder yesterday evening: if we sign a central midfielder, playmaker and winger - will Barkley still play?

Talking purely hypothetically, if we sign players such as Schneiderlin, Gabbiadini and a number ten then you'd expect them all to start regularly.

You'd expect a a partnership of Schneiderlin and Gueye so he wouldn't move further back, therefore would he move to a wider position again?

I think he'd become a squad player, which ultimately given his consistancy you'd have to say is about right

Subtly that's what I was leaning towards and perhaps it may be a catalyst for his progression, nevertheless I think it would still incite opinion.

I've always been an admirer of Ross and his potential talent, although equally I've not shirked from questioning his development, or lack of.

If in his fourth season he's still not able to consistently warrant a position in our starting XI (a mid table team?) then what does that say?
