Ross Barkley

There's an issue there that hasn't been addressed: no one is arguing Koeman isn't doing his job. he has the perfect right to sub or drop who he wants. After last season's antics from this lot, I'd welcome that as long as it's consistent and shows no fear or favour. The issue that's constantly been ignored is that this has been in the public domain, a very open and public dressing down of a player. THAT is a legitimate concern (shamefully a couple here have used that legitimate question - or their frustration at being incapable of addressing it to beg for a ban on asking it).
He was asked to justify his actions on Monday regarding Barkley.

He gave an honest answer and said the lad will get the chance to put it right on Saturday

He's always given honest assessments, it was one of things that impressed me about him at Soton. Rather that than some phoney snake oil salesman chatting beans and blowing smoke up players like Barkleys rear, by lauding his 'phenomenal' talent and allowing him to put in performances that lacked genuine work rate and endeavour on a regular basis.

As per, missing the point by a country mile.

I actually think ross was one of our better performers in that shambles last season

He was asked a question and he answered it truthfully, he'd do the same about any player and frankly thats refreshing. Though i'm sure you'll claim innocence, its pretty obvious that you're making a mountain out of a molehill here because you can't jump on his results thus far.

He answered all the questions for the last three weeks or so about Lukaku's form diplomatically. He could have done EXACTLY the same here and basically do what he did with the Lukaku questioning: tell the hacks to swing it.

Am I right in thinking Baines is dropped next game also? I think Koeman is just telling it as it is 100% or your dropped
It is part of building a winning mentality and I hope it goes all the way through the club

In the past in my opinion we teased clubs along with the media about our youth players and incredible talent. The media loved little old Everton and selling our players for us, however most were hugely inflated and the cash put a huge smile on Kenwrights accountants face

Things have changed now though its step up or hit the `pine`its great to see competition for places. I hope Barklay gets his head around this and raises his game

I feel the lads biggest issue is his mentality (example being the vid of him going down the tunnel at Wembley and Jags having to tell him the boos werent for him) I think hes terrified of doing the wrong thing and overthinks things, resulting in him either taking too long on the ball or trying to pick the safe option, he needs to get out of his own head, I do think he'll benefit from some straight talking from Koeman and some clear instruction, and although he wasnt great against Sunderland, I felt he was trying to follow Koemans instructions by tracking back etc, he lost the ball twice in and around or box in the space of about 30 seconds, which granted isnt great, but the point is he was there trying to break up the play as I can only assume he was told to do by RK, you wouldnt have seen him doing that under the previous regime.

Of course I could be wrong, and it could just be gormlessness...

Indeed, that little 30second spell was just unreal, it was like he WANTED them to score.

Im sure that was the thing Ronny was unhappy with the most.

Barkley has world class feet, but he probably has an average PL standard footballing brain..

If he had a world class brain as well he wouldn't be playing for us now, he would be at Real or Barca..

He is what he is... A very good football still with the potential to become world class..

He just needs to be honed in the right way which he obviously wasn't under Martinez as he didn't improve over the last 2 seasons..

I think Koeman is confident he can develop him to the next level, but it will take time, need to be patient with him, 22 is still a tender age even if he has been around the first team for 6 years, plenty of development ahead!

I agree with that. 100%. But it isn;t the issue and that's been hammered home here loads but is conveniently side stepped. The issue is not bollocking Barkley. By all means, do so if you think it gets more from him. The issue is that he's done it and then made it public when it should have stayed behind closed doors. To me that's playing to the gallery and I dont trust that type of stuff.

BTW, can you imagine Koeman going to a CL spot club and doing that? Not a chance. He'd last two minutes.
Dave he has to be strong enough to take criticism in private or in public, that's the pressure of being a top player. If he cant handle that then maybe we don't have the player we think we do

Lukaku had been injured and wasn't fully fit, it's also not the same scenario at all, as he didn't hook Lukaku at HT and therefore never had to defend an in game decision he'd made.

I fear Ross isn't the player Koeman wants in the no.10 role. I don't think Barkley has the mentality to play the way the manager wants him to in regards of defending as a unit and tracking back, I think Barkley has a season to prove himself.

About Koeman telling the press he wasn't good enough is neither right or wrong, it depends on how Ross takes it. If it was me and I heard my manager talking about me like that I would be disappointed and feel embarrassed. I also think it would affect my performance negatively. That's just me, how about Ross?

In fairness too, these people exist in the public domain? The same logic could be applied to him bigging up Gareth Barry's longevity, there was no real need to express his pleasure in the public domain other than the fact that it is the public domain they all exist in?
