Ross Barkley

I say again: that's fine. But why feed him to the dogs of the media?

I'm not sure how he has fed him to the media. The game was live on Sky Sports so everybody could see Ross' performance. He was quite clearly going to be asked about taking Ross off at half time and the poor performance. What is Koeman supposed to say? From what i have heard and seen he has basically said he has to up his game and wont tolerate performances like that, which is what i would hope a manager would do, manage the team and players he has at his disposal.

The second half would 'have worked' just as well if Mirallas had come off.

It was a totally arbitrary decision by Koeman who could have taken any one of five off. Let's not make it a master stroke.

No way would we have scored that 3rd goal the way we did if Barkley had stayed on the pitch

He's a player in no position of power. Koeman is a manager with all the power of the post. Major difference.

Really? Barkley had more 'power' than the then jobless manager he was discussing in the interview. Like I said Dave, hopefully the lad will learn from this experience - once you decide to hop on board with the media you can suddenly find the ride isn't quite going where you thought it was.

Certainly Koeman has power - like the power he had when he made him captain and started him in (I think) every competitive game we've played since he arrived. Look at the bigger picture and consider the message it sends not just to Barkley, but to the whole squad. As for Barkley, if he hasn't the mental toughness to deal with what is essentially being subbed for having a poor half and being told he needs to improve, then he won't become the player he has the physique and technique to be. At the very very top of the sport, it is the mental attributes that make the difference.

I have him on ignore, but still can't get away from the crap that he posts due to people still taking him seriously and answering his melodramatic and obviously transparent bilge!

They just can't see it

Every retort is another victory for him

He's gonna be the very best, like no one ever was, the popcorn is his real test, to WUM the forum is his cause

Nah, he should say phenomenal repeatedly and claim he is England's best midfielder and run his career into the ground like the last chump did

What is he to say? Just tell them he felt anyone of four could have been hooked and it was his decision to take off RB. Job done. Then he can bollock till his hearts content at FF.

It's that simple.

There is NO excuse for doing this in public and it's instructive that no one on this thread has sought to address that or counter it.

Ross was abject on Monday. His worst performance of the season but not his only poor one.

Anyone with eyes could see how poor, and Ron admitting to the press that he has spoken to him about needing to improve is not throwing him to the dogs or hanging him out to dry. It's stating the obvious.

Not admitting it would have been as bad as claiming he had a phenomenal game.

...so where does the public part of the dressing down come in?
Dave, normally I agree with a lot of your posts, however, this isn't one of them.

In sports, professional on down to kids, managers will take athletes off in front of parents, fans, etc. As an athlete most will respond in a positive way the next time they are given a chance. Being taken off is a wake up call without using words, it's "hey, you weren't good enough today, fix it or stay on the bench." Most athletes respond to that rather than a dressing down in the locker room. The coach doesn't have to go on a tyrade and say things that may cause ill feelings. It's a win win for the coach and player.

If he isn't mentally tough enough to come back stronger, work harder and play smarter than we will all see what his ceiling is as a player.

I'm fine with players getting bollockings. No problem. It's the inconsistent targeting here AND the means of delivery: ie in the glare of the media. It was a snides trick.

Baby, this is what you came for
Lightning strikes every time she moves
And everybody's watching her
But she's looking at you, oh, oh
You, oh, oh, you, oh, oh
You, oh, oh, you, oh, oh
You, oh, oh, oh, oh

im not contesting him taking him off though, I'm contesting there should have been no public statement today revealing the contents of a private meeting with the player.

If Koeman wanted to avoid Martinez's mistake he'd have binned the barrack room lawyers who downed tools intentionally not a boy who gives his all when he takes to the pitch.

I'm sorry, he's needlessly hung a talented and good lad out to dry here...maybe because he doesn't fancy taking on a serial moaner like Mirallas or a misfiring Lukaku.

I support Koeman, but I tell you what he will store up some ill feeling if he continues a line that throws his players to the dogs like he has today. Up to him. He'll either be a roaring sucess and win stuff and thereby get away with stunts like this, or he'll be bang average or worse and players will have him out.

Haha Jesus bloody Christ, can't wait for you to get banned again......... issues serious ones

Look, there's no undermining of the manager or opposing him by stating he ballsed up here. He's fallible isn't he? Why on earth are so few willing to accept he may have got this wrong here? Is his standing that fragile?
