Ross Barkley

Poor half but I think Moyes set out to stop him tonight. He couldn't cope with being so tightly marked. Good job Koeman switched things when he did. They couldn't adapt to the adjustments we made.

The number ten role requires the player to want to play forward balls between the defenders, to try to go past players after turning them, to make runs in behind. After watching Barkley for 3 years he is just not willing to do any of this. He offers himself for token side ways balls. He turns a player and then turns back onto himself without having the drive to force forward. He never makes a run in behind. He is completely ineffective.

He is absolutely petrified of making a mistake and taking gambles in any of his play. This is an absolute requirement of a PL forward player and there is no sign of it in him. He needs a sports psychologist or something to sort his head out and tell him before it's too late.
He didn't have much chance to run at them or shoot tonight. He couldn't keep the ball long enough.

I personally have thought for years that we should build the team around Ross but he was very poor tonight.

He is the type of player who'll have a quiet game but his half today was awful. Hopefully getting pulled off will motivate him.

If u map all his runs I think u will see they consists of him avoiding tackle after tackle protecting the ball but all the time being forced further and further wide until he is either at corner flag or the touch line all the while others are making forward runs that are not even seen. Yes the best thing about his game is his shot and it opened up a few times tonight for him and he refused to pull the trigger.

Martinez's approach of "give Ross freedom to make all the mistakes he wants" has backfired badly.

Not getting a minute at the Euros plus being left out of Big Sam's first squad likely had a further impact. The lad needs a few months of solid strict coaching to clear his head, should be fine come second-half of the season.

The same Steven Gerrard which who won the PFA young player of the year?

Barkley might become a great, but Gerrard was way ahead of him at similar stages in their career.

Gerrard was a terrific player in his prime to be fair, if Barkley gets close we'd be happy.

He just needs confidence...he's so boss when he believes in himself and just lets the game come to him. It's like he needs to score a goal to feel good about himself. Once one goes in he looks a completely different player (pretty much just like Rom today).

Hopefully a little time on the bench will sort him out. His problems are all between his ears.
