Ross Barkley

I've described two instances earlier (with Fellaini) when there was a need. There was no excuse for him to stand idly by.

No excuse whatsoever.

You criticise martinez for his system but not barkley for sticking rigidly to it?

There. Now you've got it.

That's exactly right. I'm not going to criticise an employee for doing his job as told by his manager. Instead, I'll criticise the manager for being an idiot and not going with another option when his initial strategy fails.

As I suspected.

Those instances I described, if he'd shifted himself he could have easily disposessed Fellaini.

But you think it's ok for him not to bother, so I don't think I'll bother explaining the reality of the situation anymore.

Of course. But we don't defend from the front in that way. We have two defensive midfielders and hold shape until the opposition come into our half. Then we press and counter. That's how we defend.

So again, Barkley doesn't defend from the front, as he shouldn't be, because we don't do it.

It's not like I'm making any of this up; they're all very obvious facts. The reality is you're wanting to see something from a player that he can't do in the system his manager employs. We don't press high, and we don't use Barkley in any defensive capacity whatsoever. So it comes down to criticising him for doing his job - which is to move into space, be available for the ball when we are in possession, and distribute intelligently with it to supporting players.

So he can basically stand in space in the oppositions half with his hands on his hips when they have the ball waiting for us to win it back and pass it to him whilst in space?

Thats our system?

So let me get this straight.

You agree with me that you're blaming Barkley for... doing his job, right?

Not exactly, but yes.

His job is to move into space and be the focal point of a counter attack. I don't know why this is a surprise.

Again, we play with two holding midfielders solely to accommodate that play. Otherwise, you'd play with a box to box midfielder and an attacking mid, whose job would be then to pick up midfielders and mark.

But we don't. I don't actually understand why people would want Barkley tracking runners aggressively so that he's, first, out of position when we do counter and, second, ensuring we only have one attacking player up front in Lukaku to hit early for a counter.

I love Ross but he wasn't great today at all, and hasn't been recently either. He seems to struggle to go past a man, something he used to do with ease. Seems to have slowed down quite a lot, don't know whether he's overthinking things or low on confidence but it's noticeable that he's become easier to play against. Still, under a different manager I hope he can become the player I want him to be. I'd still build the team around him, though I think he needs moving back to CM soon.

Barkley, as much as anyone today, looked badly out of shape today. You look at Rooney nearly twice his age doing what we should be expecting of Barkley, but the lack of fitness stops that from happening. If he is going to make the step up to the next level, he needs a manager that'll challenge him rather than coddle him and make no demands of him.

He just shouldn't be undroppable, same as every player. But it doesn't seem to matter to Bobby he has his favorites and plays them regardless of form. Does them no favours.
