Ross Barkley

He had the better stats of any England midfielder going in to the euros. Whether it was him not getting into the team or something else there is a mental block that has halted his progress and confidence. It's funny because Barkley is the type of player they need in the final third.

I don't think anyone can doubt he is a natural talent. But he needs to develop a football brain. I don't know who would be the right person to help him in this regard, but I'd like Rooney to return one day and teach him a few things.

Sod England, Barkley is the player that WE need in the final third.

Needs to get his head together and enjoy his football.

He lost his England place because corrupt fat Sam and clueless Boring Gareth are inept.

He didn't play in the Euros because Roy Hodgson was inept - with Hodgson himself admitting that in training 'we've used Ross to represent Gareth Bale because he's the only player we have who runs at people'.
Its easy for us to blame other people for Ross's failings, but a lot is down to himself. I was ridiculed in an earlier post when I praised Phil Neville for his attitude and comittment. He had limited skills but was willing to work hard to suceed as a profesional footballer. If Ross had 50% of Nevilles attitude etc he would be and can be a top class player imo.

There's absolutely no evidence that Ross is lazy at all. What he does need is more 'confidence' - or at least confidence not to let bad form effect him.

I'm not blaming anybody else for Ross's supposed 'failings'. He's a class act already and will only get better. He's in a bit of poor form and he'll get out of it, as long as he backs himself.

He's what? 23? He has had Moyes, warnock, bobby,Hodgson,Sam,Southgate and Ronald as managers..... all different ages all different styles of play all different man management styles.... none of which have worked.

But it's not ross Barkley fault that he is going backwards

He's 22.

What are you on about nothing has worked? Going backwards?

Blatantly not true.

I mean sending him on loan didn't work.... Moyes being strict didn't work... bobby allowing him total freedom didn't work, apparently Hodgson doesn't know what he's talking about when he didn't pick him because he gives possession away easily .... RK approach of being honest and critical in public while also telling him he has potential but just needs to show it... doesn't work. Nothing seems to bring the best out of him. He used to be fearless and was a breath of fresh air... now he looks like he's terrified when he has the ball and loses possession.... he's going backwards... he's lost his England place and could potentially lose his Everton place ... that is going backwards imo

I havnt said he was lazy, but needs to work harder and change his attitude if he wants to suceed. There is no doubting his football ability. Look at Gareth Bale, struggled for a place in the Spurs team in his early 20s, put his head down, worked hard- look where he is now.

I don't recall which journalist it was, but a fairly prominent one tweeted about the prevailing thought within the England setup being that Barkley is 'uncoachable'. With Southgate having been promoted from within, it seems unlikely that a call up is going to be on the cards unless they get into trouble in qualifying.

But it's implying that Ross doesn't work hard mate - and my point is there's no evidence of that. He just needs to back himself and believe he can be as good as he should be.

We take him for granted. He's 22 and will get better. The fact he's not in the England squad is a sad indictment of that shambles of a team, though, and not him - though I do think it hasn't helped his confidence (and perhaps that's where his mental toughness can be called into question). But I don't think anybody on here has the expertise or right to do that.

That's in no way surprising. The lad's head is so full of the jeers of his own fans, there's no room left for tactical advice
This is the biggest thing for me. We were so close to a fourth place spot in our FIRST season under Roberto. We should have had it in all honesty, but the team could never live up to expectations after that season. Rather than improve on the squad we had that year, we tried to roll with the same squad and Roberto's philosophy ultimately damaged the club in the long run. It turned the fans against the players. Roberto's flying start helped the club in the sense that we acquired a new owner shortly after his departure, but it hurt the club in the sense that the players were held more accountable for their performances (both fairly and unfairly). Ross cannot play fearlessly anymore because the fans will not allow him to get away with it if he makes a mistake.
