Ross Barkley

Have you been following the gist of this debate mate and my position in it? It doesn't look like it from that post.

There is absolutely no contradiction between what I've said in the past and now. Just to explain for clarity: my point has always been that Stones isn't worth big money as a defender. Period. He's a talent and a valuable one further up the pitch, in my longstanding opinion. As for the £40m price tag: that was two summers ago, since which time prices have rocketted and anyone would be out of their mind not to have demanded well in excess of that this summer. Exertion didn't though, they got mugged off.

Sorry if all that sounds like "wumming" to you. Maybe you should put your thinking cap on before you post, otherwise someone might think you're the one on the wind up.

I agree with Dave inasmuch as I feel that Stones will finish up as a midfielder in the Hoddle mode. That's for lots of the actual technical reasons, but also for the reason that Stones himself is already impatient with a predominately defensive role. His career will only progress if he moves further forward, for most of the time.

I dont think he is good enough to play midfield.

Nowhere near dynamic enough and although he is "good on the ball for a defender" he is hardly brilliant at it either.

Perhaps an unpopular view here but.......It is martinez's fault as to why Ross is not as good as he should be.

Look, people keep throwing stats out from halves of football or age and goals and stuff. That is all well and good, but what i care about is ross losing the ball trying to turn defenders more than once, or not tracking back, or just looking to shoot despite the fact he hasn't got the space.

So what i believe is the case is rather than have a real manager coach Ross into a midfielder, he has instead been allowed to play as a 19/20 year old down the park with his mates. He has not learned anything new really, not been disciplined the same way some players are when they are young so he still plays with an air of a young head on him.

I also believe there is a real player in there, but balls to the first half stats, Tim howard has 100 shooting accuracy in his time here, he shot once by accident. If you judge ross on simply stats and ignore his entire game then you are just deluded into thinking there is no way he can be a bad player, because all those little passes reached someone.

Agree 100%, Martinez indulged him way too muc, didnt insist on progress and allowed his fitness to drop.

Interesting comments on Barkley from Osman on Radio City.

'Needs to learn to make the right desicion, he'll learn that from this manager'

'Never had to track back under Martinez, was all about flair'

Which explains why he isn't currently being trusted deeper.

'Koeman will make him a better player'

I got stick for pointing this out last year. People were getting on his back for not defending, when it was crystal clear he was operating in a certain role that he'd been given, and that if you wanted to criticise him for not defending, blame Martinez for it.
